Wood Stove - have you heard of Merlin?

We are trying to decide which make and model of wood burning stove to pick. From our calculations of the room size it needs to be around 5kw. Has anyone got any experience of Merlin wood burning stoves? Had not heard of them before this evening when a possible installer visited. He is totally in favour of them and doesn't sell anything else.
Do you know whether the work has to be inspected by the council before/after installation? We live in a fairly modern house, built about 1980. Grateful for any advice!;)

Hi
I have never heard of them before, but i have just had a look on their website. Made in hereford and cast metal
I wonder why he doesnt sell anything else?? You are narrowing down your choices when only looking at one brand. Best thing is to go to a stove shop and check out all the designs, features and specs of several makes/models. Dont rush into anything, do your homework, they may be very good, but you dont have to have a Merlin one because thats all this one person fits.
There might be someone who comes on who has previous experience with them.
Have you been told their prices?? how do they compare with the same kw size of different makes??0 -

I don't know of Merlin either, but you could always take a look at user reviews on www.whatstove.co.uk to see what your options are.
You do not need to have a stove installation inspected by your local council if it has been installed by a registered HETAS installer. If you self-install, or have it installed by someone who isn't part of the HETAS cabal, then you will need the council to check it conforms to builing regulations.0 -
Thank you for your advice! I have decided to steer clear of Merlin.0

Hello Karen,
In my opinion i would visit various retailers who carry out installations and listen to what they have to say, Merlin stoves carry a lifetime guarantee and are less expensive than Clearview, i have fitted both and would personally choose Merlin as a high performance top quality value for money machine....how can you go wrong with a life time guarantee????0 -

Is it a true lifetime guarantee or is it one of those fantastical not really lifetime guarantees?
I'd bet it excludes any parts that are deemed as consumable(?) and I'd also not be surprised if the lifetime was a lot less than expected.
I have pans that say "lifetime guarantee" on them but what they really mean is 10 years (which is the expected lifetime of the pan).
Doesn't sound quite the same when it is put like that.
Colour me suspicious0 -
Always listen to an installer, they are the last in the chain and have to back the product and installation up with a guarantee.
Sales people can be misleading and just sell you what they see is the best margin.... Merlin is high quality 80% efficient with a lifetime guarantee they also are smoke tested for defra ...be intrigued to find out what you end up buying!0 -
where is it made, any one know?0

Whatstove is a great website! We are thinking about getting a new stove soon - think your link will help!0

I have a Merlin stove. I live in Hereford, where the company is based, and my girlfriend's parents have brought many stoves from them. Never had a problem with it, glass keeps clear and it heats up quickly.
I have the standard model and it will burn through the night, it heats the whole house, and the glass front is good for just sitting and watching it burn.0
