    Have you considered Chester its not too far but for pub & food Chester holds its own . I dont know you so not going to suggest anything too full on but there are two saturday meets at Chester races in sept 2nd & 4th sat (10th & 24th i think) please check. You can get there by train and some decent hotels in and around the area depending on budget. A hour from Mankchester. (race weekends are great there) But a big fan of York too a little further and similar to Chester in style and all roads lead from the river with roman history. Have a good break & birthday
