Love York too, but have you considered Hull? Yes, I'm being serious!
During the day there is plenty to see - Town Docks Museum, The Deep, Street Life (love it!), Transport Museum, Wilberforce Museum, East Riding Museum, Spurn Lightship on the Marina... You can also follow the Fish Trail arounds the Old Town and riverside and check out the architecture in the local churches or rest for a while in Queens Gardens.
You could take in a show at the Hull New Theatre, City Hall or Hull Truck Theatre, or go ice skating if you fancy. There may be an event or sports fixture at the KC stadium.
In the evening there are plenty of good pubs (but research first, eh?!) and all manner of restaurants from the well known chains to independents. Hitchcocks is a well known vegetarian buffet restaurant that pleases even the most hardened meat eaters.

Hmmm never thought of Northern Ireland .... That's one to think about.... But please don't send people in balaclavas after me if I don't go!
I do like Hull - my mum's family is from there though so I think we wouldn't be able to go without the visiting family bit (not that I don't like them but it wasn't the weekend I was after!)
Thanks everyone for the ideas..... I'm spoilt for choice now!

If you're from the North West then you're in an advantageous position to visit our wee place. Take the Cairnryan to Larne ferry and that leaves you with quite a short drive on the other side. The coastal drive north is one of the big tourist attractions. It's rather like visiting a foreign country with lots of familiar roadsigns, although the placenames are odd. You don't have to change your money either becuase our currency is sterling. Book yourself into somewhere like Portrush or Portstewart - oodles of choices for accom up there. Visit the Giant's Causeway, one of the 7 wonders of the world. Go to the adjacent Dunluce Castle for history and amazing views. Visit the ancient walled City of Derry, walls wide enough to drive around. Get a guided tour of Bushmills Distillery, or just relax on the beach and enjoy amazing food at night.
For more treats come onto the site anytime and our wee band of Ulster Folk will keep you right.0 -

Sounds great! I've always wanted to visit the Giant's Causeway! Will definitely mention it to DH.
Thanks again

If he doesn't agree to come over - remind him of the men in the masks
Tell him to book the ferry tickets now or the Leprechaun gets it

We've been having a look and we are not far enough north for the ferry
(four hours drive) for just a few days holiday (I'm not a keen flyer either) but we both like the idea of going so we are going to put that on our list for a longer break!
Thanks for the ideas as I'd have never thought of Northern Ireland and now it's on our "must visit" list!
