Tips for TomTom that can be used in Scotland?

Hi Guys
Any thoughts or tips whatsoever on the below would be really appreciated...
For a mature student shortly about to move to Scotland on her own from Northern Ireland, she needs a TomTom for driving between placements in Scotland, ideally with live traffic updates and the 'speaking "bear left" voice' and decent display and mount kit.
I'm worried when the TomTom website states that some newer maps mightn't fit onto a TomTom device (??!). I'd like to be sure that whatever TomTom she gets has sufficient memory to contain the latest map for Scotland.
Any suggestions you can kindly offer about what TomTom package she should go for would be truly appreciated.
Warm regards
Peter

That note is for people with old systems not the new ones. If you are buying new it doesn't matter.
Why a Tom-Tom in particular by the way? Just see which is the best sat-nav by trying a few in Halfords then get it cheaper online (or get cash back).
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Overcharged- don't know if it's still the same, but I bought Garmin over TomTom a few years ago as TomTom mapping for NI was awful. Would make sense to have decent mapping for NI as well!0

Just make sure she has a map too. SatNavs will sometimes take you the long route regardless of how it is programmed. I am constantly on at my kids to carry a map too.
In Scotland many rural places have the same name so you need to be sure you have the right one.
On a side note I haven't updated my maps since I got the machine and apart from M80 (no change to overall route you just end up off piste a little) and M74 (brand new section of road, but fairly simple to figure out) it hardly needs to be too up to date.0 -
As an expat English person living in Scotland and having used mine in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland I can honestly say Tom Tom have made the same efforts with their Scottish maps as they have with the rest of the UK.
If you can find one that you genuinely like, go for it. I do sometimes get a little bemused at the routes TT suggests, but as long as you've a map you should be fine.0 -
Thanks for all the useful feedback you are all excellent and have given me real food for thought.
At the moment I'm looking at the "Start 20 UK & Ireland" and the "Adhesive dashboard mount kit" and "Traffic Receiver" (http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/car-navigation/start-20-regional/index.jsp)
It states that there is an included "USB Car charger" in the box.
Would this be a sufficient SatNav package for her do you think? Or is something else required?0 -
Doesnt look like theres live traffic updates on that one,I've got them on mine and its worth the extra.Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Yeah it's an extra £49.99 for a "traffic receiver" accessory which supplies the updates I think.
Further to what an earlier poster (Fivetide) mentioned about Halfords, I just noticed this "Garmin" one (mentioned by poster Lirin). From the looks of it, it already has live traffic updates built in. Also already seems to have a 'adhesive' mount accessory included which is extra with the TomTom also. Is cheaper too! What do you think?

I've had all makes of satnav and found Garmin to be lousy on routing. You can buy a TT with built in HD traffic not a seperate receiver.Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Okay will check out which TomTom has built-in traffic updates now. Thanks for your feedback0 -
OKay I found this TomTom one for £179.99 which has the traffic updates.
I guess this is good to go once she also gets an adhesive mount?
