So rises in scales are not done just because you have done a years work but are award if your points have gone up enough. EG by more qualified, experience.

My wife has never received yearly increases in scale just based on a years service AFAIK it as always been based on points, that may have happened due to points earned.
AFAIK there is no rule which says you go up a scale each year of service to the maximum?

You do stay at the same level because you have done something wrong like you stated before??

what if the top level requires a degree to get the points required?

So an increment is done on 1st of april? sounds yearly to me.

Depends on what is agreed, in my case it ws agreed I would go up the scale if I performed well. With that I am aware of one person kicking off when they didn't go up the scale.

As for requiring a degree that wouldn't be on the same scale, the scale would apply to a job and if you need a degree you will need it to start the job at the bottom of the scale.

The link you have just shown my point of the top and bottom not being massively different.

I am open to the fact that things may operate different in different parts of the public sector.

You do still seem rather bitter about your wifes position, but does that really mean you should wish it on the rest of us?

As for requiring a degree that wouldn't be on the same scale, the scale would apply to a job and if you need a degree you will need it to start the job at the bottom of the scale.

Providing the points are hit, you are aware the 1st of april is the start of the new financial year.
So you have to gain enough points in the previous financial year.

1st of april is usually when wage increase in all sectors are applied, that does not mean you get a wage increase every 1st of april.;)

As for the bold bit you are now making it up, my wifes job would require her to have a degree for the top of the scale. Her job requires a degree to people applying, she got it on relevent experience.

Many people in the public sector work in roles without a degree in roles should they come on tho the open market would require a degree.

To ask, what job do you do in what area of the country. I think i remember you said you were in accounts so that is at least something that can be qualified against the private sector.

I work in accounts in manchester I don't wish give my exact salary but I can say the top of my band is more than many of the starting salaries I see but less than most of the maximiums.

As I said before I weighed it up against benefits I get and decided its worth it.

It's less than the private sector but you wont give the approximates. I think we get what that means.:D;)

Ok here is a deal I have took a percentage and applied it to all the figures involved and round and it comes out at. (In short this isn't my salary but the relationship remains the same).

    My salary band:
    £23.4k-£26k

    Jobs currently adverted
    £24k-£28.6k

As I say the pay is less but there is other benefits to which I am more than happy where I am.

This is true, I get less money but:

    Flexi time.
Good pension (Not as good as it has been for those before me)
    Free travel of public transport
32 days holiday (increase with service to 37)

    :D

Just one point, flexi-time shouldn't be a perk, it should be a mutual benefit i.e. to smooth out the workflows, especially beneficial in accountancy. BTW that is a high number of holidays, why do you get so many? does it include bank holidays?

True on the flexi it does help both me and them.

Yes I have included bank holidays in the numbers, still a lot more holidays than my last private sector job.

that's not a massive amount of holiday. i get 38 days, before taking bank holidays into account, and we usually get christmas eve and new years eve off as well. :D

I just wanted to point out that it isn't all gravy in the public sector. People need to distinguish between civil servants (central government) and local government officers, and indeed between different councils. I work in local government and those people on a low wage did not receive the small pay-rise passed on to civil servants on a corresponding salary. Furthermore, staff are losing weekend working rates and outer London weighting. That is a loss of c£1k on a salary of about £15-17k after a couple of years of no raises and with a lot of people already at top of scale. Plus later entrants are not on final salary pension schemes (they are on career average instead) and holiday entitlement is 21-22 days pa.
