I'm always tempted to do an INR with one of those sellers and give the item to a charity shop, but I can never bring myself to do it.1

If you're selling a large batch of items, its a pain if the payments trickle in and you end up having a trip to the post office every day in order to post straight away to provide good service. I offer postage within 1 business day. I haven't asked for payment within 24 hours as I wouldn't want to put off buyers, but I can understand why someone would. If I'm buying I always pay immediately.
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

to be fair I have had to put quite a lot into my own terms & conditions when I was selling a lot of stuff recently: all of it was a result of the way buyers treat sellers: i.e. if you don't pay within 7 days I'll cancel your item and resell it, postage 2 days, packing 2 days (4 days in total), refunds only if items are faulty or not as described exactly.
All of those might sound draconian but there are any number of demanding buyers about who demand they pay when they feel like it, you must post immediately they pay and by the fastest method even if you have stated otherwise and charged for cheapest and feel they can return whatever they like just because they don't want it anymore or the wife has seen it cheaper elsewhere (I kid you not!)
Buyers have sellers over a barrel: I have had stuff blatantly stolen as ebay won't allow a decent p&p charge that covers tracking parcels and will just grant refunds willy nilly in the buyers favour, oh and 'the doozy': only buyers can give negative feedback!
Ebay have a monopoly position, if they didn't they'd soon lose a large chuck of buyers!
As a buyer I wouldn't give two tosses about them being draconian, only about about the fact they were completely unenforceable. Then again, we should be grateful you're willing to accept our money, shouldn't we?

  • Just a thought - Because of some of the reports I see on this site, I have hesitated starting an e*ay house clear out (married with 2 teenage kids - not clearing THEM - we have loads of "stuff"). Maybe Martin could set up a fair trading buy/sell section of this site...........:money:!!

Oh well, as I said, just a thought..... unless Martin, you know different!

If he didn't offer the same buyer protection as ebay, why would anybody buy here instead? And if he did, sellers would have the same complaints

  • I just have a feeling that such an arrangement on this site would be fairer, that's all. I admit I have no evidence for that. You are surely not suggesting that members of this site would not be trustworthy?;)

I would be happier to start using e*ay if they allowed sellers to give negative feedback on buyers, which I understand used to be the case but isn't now. A business can afford a proportion of bad debts - someone like me who would hope to get rid of no longer required household items would take a big hit if the proceeds of a sale were effectively stolen by an unscrupulous buyer who knew how to use the "rules" to their advantage. A system that effectively encourages that, by allowing only one party to leave negative feedback, is a bit too one-sided for my liking.

If I go ahead with e*ay,I will be really nervous every time i see an item sold in case some vindictive swine sees a new seller and decides to take the p*ss.:(

Why are you selling on ebay if your this paranoid. Your silly and mainly uneforceable terms and conditions are probably attracting dodgy buyers.

The only T&Cs that matter are ebay and Paypals. The rest are as useful as rice pudding.

I don't really see these as unenforceable or silly really at all and I've been on ebay as a buyer and seller for over 10 years.
At least when I sell items I am scrupulously fair and make my terms clear and upfront.
Sellers are perfectly within their rights to cancel a sale and relist it (bearing in mind they pay again for relisting) if they think a buyer isn't going to pay for items.
Postage & packing 4 days in total is fine again for reasons others have given here.
Not allowing change of mind refunds also fair, although whether ebay would simply refund anyway is another matter.

Frankly, if you don't agree with a sellers conditions you can always buy from someone else.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.

Have you looked at some of the threads on this forum -even some of the posts on this very thread. Martin is a very intelligent man so why would he want to let some of these people to trade under his good name and reputation?
