You have paid for a wedding dress that you were advised would be 'like new'. It's not, so the retailer has to put things right. They can fix it up or give you a refund. The £145 for alterations is nothing to do with this, that's just for fitting, which you no longer require.

I'd write to the shop stating this and saying that they need to make arrangements to fix the dress or provide a refund. See what they come back with.

Did you pay on a credit card?

It would help the non-wedding inclined folk of MSE to know what a "wedding dress sample" is.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

A dress that is used by people going into the shop to try on dresses. If they like the dress then they buy a new version of it. So this dress may have had 100s of people in it depending on how popular the dress was. The shop then sells the dress on cheaply after the season is over.

I bought a £1000 dress for £484 buying one of these.

Aah, a bit a demonstrator in a car dealership.

  • yeah its just the dress that is used for people to try on, and can then be sold off the shop floor as a 'sample' so its not new but like i said they told me everything would be fixed and cleaned up so it would be like new!

i paid a bit of the deposit by debit card then the rest cash,
but that is what i think the alterations is just for alterations, if the dress had fitted me then i wouldnt of needed them anyway and would they of given me the dress like if i picked it up for my wedding!!
  • just to add it does state on receipts that no refunds will be given on cancelled orders or cancelled weddings, which im not after a refund as thats fair enough but would at least like the dress to be in a decent state and worth the money i paid

I know sample dresses get people trying them on - thats the whole point - but I've never seen one in the sort of state that you describe. It's one thing to have them fix some loose beading and obviously give it a clean but I'm not sure I'd want to pay that much money for something that has '3 massive rips' on it. I just wouldn't trust any mending job to repair it that well.
I'd certainly ask them if they're now saying that £145 covered the cost of mending too.
Failing that, I'd go have a fitting and put the onus on them to make it as new...you'll get the extra £145 back when you sell it

I would pay the relatively little bit extra and get it 'as new'. As you state, it is pretty worthless now.

If they won't do anything, or costs seem to be creeping up unfairly, speak to Consumer Direct to find out your rights.

How did you pay for the dress? If by Visa, you may be able to attempt a chargeback as a last resort but you need to be sure whether you did get what you paid for or not.

For what its worth op, I wouldn't expect the dress (sample or not) to be sold to me in a state of disrepair and dirty.

Nor would I be looking at spending more money with them to get a remedy.

It should be in a similar state now to the day in which you purchased it.

It may well be but the OP 'can't be sure'.

You'd think having spent a four figure sum on a used dress she'd have given it a thorough check over before leaving it with the shop, but as she didn't she cannot prove that damage has been done since.
