wedding dress

Hiya, im not sure if this is the right place but worth a try,
i brought a wedding dress sample from a bridal shop and was told it would be like new when i picked it up, and would need to pay £145 for alterations, as it was too big but my wedding got cancelled and when i spoke to the shop on the phone they told me to just come in and collect it so i did and a week went past but just had a feeling so i opened the dress bag a little to find the bodice dirty, crystals falling off it and pins sticking out of it and at a closer look the hook and eye bit by the zip is broke, there are 3 massive rips on the train, and it has marks everywhere, i now see it as a expensive rag as its not wearable.
i paid a 4 figure amount for it, but when i rang the shop to tell them i wasnt happy about the state of it they just said well that would be fixed when you had fitting so i would have to pay for it to be altered to have it fixed up or just pay £150 for it to be dry cleaned but what are my rights, surely i shouldnt have to accept that, so i would have to go through fittings for a dress that im not even gonna wear cant sell it in state its in what can i do?? thanks

so are you saying you bought a dress, advised it needed modification, weddng was cancelled and you collected it before they had done any modifications?
So it should be in the condition based on when you bought it? Or have I misunderstood your post (I read it three times and still wasn't 100%)0 -
How long ago did you buy it?
When did you pick it up? (Why did you not inspect it in the shop when collecting?)
Did you pay a deposit then the balance on collection? If not, what was the payment schedule?
How did you pay? (Cash? Debit card? Credit card?)0 -
i brought a dress which yes needed alterations to fit me properly my fitting for that was supposed to be in march next year, where after it being altered i would of picked up ready for wedding in immaculate condition, but because i havent had it altered they are not gonna clean it or fix the rips or crystals falling off, i rang them after wedding had been cancelled to see what would happen they just said to come and collect when i was ready which i did,
i first put deposit down and paid full balance before wedding got cancelled, but the price for alterations was to be paid at final fitting, i picked it up 14th august, and it was already upsetting enough picking up the dress and wouldnt dream that they would give it me in that state0 -
So was it in that state when you paid for it and they put it away, or has it deteriorated since?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

i cant be sure, but i was told i would receive it in new condition and whether or not my weddings been cancelled surely i should receive it as that and whether or not ive had it altered0

It should be fit for purpose yes, if it did not need altering, and it was new, then one would expect it to be wearable, not falling apart..0

But they would have done the repairs the same time they did the alterations and they would have been included in the £145, you can't expect them to do them for free just because you don't need it to be altered anymore.
Have you asked them how much it will be to mend it without the alterations? It should be fit for purpose yes, if it did not need altering, and it was new, then one would expect it to be wearable, not falling apart..
But it wasn't new, it was a sample that had probaby been tried on by dozens of ladies.
OP knew she wasn't buying a new dress, the shop said it would be 'like new' when she picked it up after alterations.
To me this would imply that they would alter it, repair it and clean it, all for the £145 quoted. OP can't expect the shop to repair it and clean it for nothing just because she doesn't need it to be altered anymore.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
You've paid a 4 figure sum for a sample dress? And never looked at it before handing over the money? I'm just checking I've read this post right as it sounds unbelievable. A sample is not the same as a badly worn and damaged second hand item which sounds more like what you've described. Sorry but still reeling at the idea of paying over a grand for a sample! Don't plan another wedding without visiting us on the weddings board first!!0

The £145 was for all alterations to be done that was needed not to be cleaned and fixed up,
yeas i paid a four figure sum for sample as its a very expensive dress, and two other shops quoted the same price for it and the dress wasnt second hand it is a sample like you said that has been tried on, yes of course i looked at it and tried it on but they said it would be like new when i picked it up0 -
but i didnt expect to pick it up in the state its in after paying what i did for it, even if the weddings cancelled i think its just awful, in the changing rooms there is a sign that says £145 for any alterations that would need doing, nothing about that the dress wont be cleaned or repaired if you dont pay for alterations0
