Agreed I need to get an engineers report. Can this be any other garage or someone specific do you know?

    Any garage can do it.

Remember to keep the receipt for the inspection/report as if you can find the garage liable they should reimburse that also.

Even my local garage? I was worried if there would be a conflict of interest as we use them all the time but they are extremely professional and wouldn’t put their reputation on the line saying something that was not accurate.

Ye thats fine. They will be just as qualified to diagnose your car as anybody else.

does look a bit dodgy but it might be irrelevant. If you took the car to a garage for an engineers report and they discovered it then it'd raise some eyebrows as to why it's been done. But seeing as you've taken the cluster out and sent it to somebody else; who's mentioned it to you and you refunded him.
It could be argued that it could have been done by you because they kept coming on and you needed to get it through the MOT or by the bloke you sold it to, to get a refund. It could be argued that it's gone through too many hands to know who did it.

Would I need to prove that the blocked lights are relevant to the engine failure? I would have hoped that the very fact they blocked them off at all would be enough that a judge would decide I should get my money back like Flyboy says!?

These engines are that expensive I assure you. There are two on ebay at the moment both at £1650 and both are for other cars that use the same engine (Celica t-sport and lotus Elise)

That is not what I wrote. I was merely suggesting that a District Judge would look upon the actions of the dealer as an attempt to hide the nature of faults inherent with the car when you purchased it. This will, in all likelihood, go against the dealer. The amount of compensation awarded will depend on several factors.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
