Help cutting hair with clippers

Hello all.
"She who must not be mentioned" used to cut my hair with the electric shears so things being as they are, it's either DIY or the barber's shop. The thing is, I checked prices out in town this morning, (after I'd paid off one of my credit cards. Am I happy or what), and I'm quite shocked to see that you can no longer get a trim for 10/-
As I'm currently doing a passably good impression of "Back to the Future's" Doc Brown :rotfl: I'm wondering if it's possible to cut my own hair with said shears. I keep it quite short (there's not much left anyway and what is left is rapidly going grey) but I get the feeling that it's very easy to make a right pig's ear of it and end up as a skinny-head.
Anyone have any advice/suggestions apart from being a middle-aged saddo with a grey ponytail  NOT!
Thanks all.

Go for it Martyn! I got my OH these for his birthday:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Remington-HC500A-Hair-Clipper/dp/B000H5UTQI
and he can do it on his own no problem - they're really quite fool-proof. Make sure you've got a spare mirror to check out your back / nape and ensure you trim your crown properly and you'll be fine. I chose these clippers as they're suitable for use in the bath (neckshave etc) - haircut here is £8 so they've paid for themselves 3 times over x0 -
Hi Benthosboy,
There's an older thread that may help so I've added your post to it to keep all the suggestions together.
Some of the posts on this thread might be useful too:
