I cut my boy's hair, mind you they are only 4 at the moment and don't yet understand you can go to the hairdresser. I don't like little boys hair too short so I start with no. 3 at the very back, then 4 or 5 higher up and no 7 even higher, the very top and fringe I do with the scissors and I am getting better at blending the hair lengths together. It just takes practise and luckily for me my kids are too young to really complain and I hope I will be fairly good by the time they are old enough to be bothered about haircuts.

I used to do my sons hair on a number 4 all over, but since he reached around 9 years old he refused to have what he nicknamed a prison haircut and wanted a proper style with gel on and flicked up at the front like all his friends. Our haircuts are only £4 so its alot cheaper than the OP prices.

Wow, thanks a lot you guys. I've been busy at football today so I thought while I had 5 mins i'd see what response I'd got to my post. and what a response! I hope i've thanked everyone for answering. In the cold light of day I can see a couple of mistakes with the hair but fortunately for me the 3 yr old came off worse and not the 10 year old. Best effort was the 7 yr old so all in all not too bad. It's the blending that stumps me, I have one length then an almost def line to the next length. I did a 3 on the back and sides and then cos they want long on top I did a 7. but should I have done a 3, then maybe a 5 then a 7?

    Thanks again,
    Tina

Anyone got any tips about cutting girls' hair?

there was a thread on here about a year ago which someone posted on about a way to cut longish hair with layers but I didn't understand it.

apparently you turn your head downwards then twist the hair up on top of the head and pull the pony tail past the end of your nose then just trim the ends level with the end of your nose. But how do you do that when your head is pointing towards the floor?

Confused but hoping someonw will know what I mean
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

    Hi guys,
I have 3 boys who have their hair cut every 6 weeks. It costs me £22.50 in the barbers, so in a moneysaving frenzy I bought a pair of clippers! I have just managed to give them all a going over with them and I think its not too bad for a first effort. My only concern is that my eldest is 10 and I cant afford to get it wrong. So with this in mind are there any books or even a hairdresser that can give me some tips. they all have it shaved up the back and longer on top so it can be gelled. I'm a bit unsure how to blend it in.
My eldest also always seems to have smelly hair even when its just been washed, any ideas?
    thanks
    Tina

I've always done my sons hair, he's 6 now - it's pretty easy He gets a blade 3 all over then a blade 2 round the sides and blended into the top.

When blending, as you go up the head, tilt the clippers away from the head when you come to the line that you are blending along. It does take soe practice...but hair grows back :D

I saw that technique on 'This Morning' a while ago.

Once you have pulled the pony tail forward, lift your head - you will be able to see the hair, then when you cut into it, make it a bit choppy rather than a perfect line.

I done my sisters hair that way just yesterday, she thought I was weird but was pleased with the result.

  • I do my own too - Mr Proctalgia - that is a fine effort for a DIY - lots of different lengths.
I'm afraid i go for the guard off - all off - same everywhere - then 6 months later i do it again

    Cheers

sorry to be thick about this, I just can't picture it in my mind's eye. So once you have straightened up, do you pull the pony tail down over your face or do you pull it so that it is parallel to the floor and then cut it in line with the tip of your nose?
