Can a ESA50 form be typed ?

Would it be possible for me to type up my ESA50 form that I intend to send back on Monday ? Due to hand problems I find it easier to type as it would take quite a while to hand write. Obviously I can hand write anything that needs ticking or quick answers, it is just the long answers. If so, should I selotape the cut out parts to where it says to write your answers ?

Thanks all !!

Yes, we typed/filled in the PDF from on line and posted it off, the results were the same as usual as in the support group for at least three months.....

I don't think it really matters how or what you put on the ESA50. You will either not have an assessment or will have one. Like many others, I gave very little information on mine thinking that the DWP will contact the GP and the consultants so why bother. Had an assessment and was put in the Support Group for 2 years.
  • Thanks both for your help. I had no idea there was a PDF version.

Sunnyone - That is great, I just found it online, so what actually happens with it, do I print it out and send off after filling it in ? Can it be saved as I go along ?

Sangiar - I thought your GP is not contacted unless you appeal. or is this not true ?

    Thanks !!

Its difficult for us to do any form as my hands dont work and my husband has had a stroke (alongside his wisper from dialysis kidney failure and heart failure and all the other things on the side :o, its his ESA claim) which has left him with language difficulties so we were stuck on how to do the form but we found it online after a post linking it here and we managed to cobble a typed response together with a bit of help and it was printed out after it was filled in then posted registed post.

They do not normally contact anyone for evidence for ESA, even for appeal its not guarenteed so if you want any additional information taken into account you need to gather it and send it off with the ESA50.

    Good luck.

From my experience with ESA, the DWP very rarely contact anybody that has any dealings with you. They generally rely on what the ATOS assessor says.
I am given to understand that the DWP expect you to do the work for them and produce medical reports.
But even those are flawed as very few reports actually give any information that could be useful when testing you under the various descriptors.

It is normally DLA when they contact your GP.

The DWP do expect people to do the work for themselves, quite rightly, obtaining medical reports for the hundreds of thousands of claimants would be a logistical nightmare anyway.

It is however unfair of them to imply that they will get medical reports.
Indeed it would be a logistical nightmare, however, having sections of the form where you are instructed to give details of all medical practitioners you're in contact with clearly implies to most people that they will contact these people if there is any doubt in entitlement.

Rather than contacting them only if the claim cannot be dismissed on what's on the face of the form, as the person expected it to go along with the reports obtained from those doctors. (As it seems to some to be the case at the moment)

However - 'it would be a logistical nightmare' has to be set against the fact that it's often quite vulnerable people filling in the form. Even if the form was clear, and the cost of any appeals for ESA, as well as the cost of administering a subsequent failed claim for JSA.

They dont imply that they will get in touch with a claimants GP they state that they may get in touch.

People need to take responsibility for their claims and stop blaming the DWP for every little thing that goes wrong with their claim. Granted the DWP do get things wrong but they shouldnt be blamed for lazyness on the part of claimants.

Again, you assume that all clients are able to read forms well, and have no difficulty writing letters, going out to GP, possibly paying for reports, ...

And the relevant section of the current ESA50 asks for GP and other healthcare professional details.
It does not state anything about what uses these addresses will be put to.

I know some arent capable but its up to them to get help or up to people to actively help them.

Dont assume that I am assuming anything. I've dealt with enough claimants to know how varied they are.
