One of the main things about Lidl is that the better prices are not alongside more expensive items. So when you do a complete shop there you're coming out with a full trolley for a lot less than you would be if you went to the market leaders. There's no temptation to buy-one-get-one-free or anything else. It's just bargains all the way. Even better of you pick out of the 30% off items.

So while Tesco or ASDA might be able to match Lidl on own brand items the overall shop at Lidl is consistently cheaper.

The 30% off items are usually dated a few days in advance, not like the majors which are normally dated that day.
Well....... I thought it was good!!

Yes and I've found they keep very well. I've also found no problems with fruit and veg although other posters say they do. The only store which comes close in prices is Supervalu but that's only available here in the Promised Land.
  • Tesco Wafer thin smoked ham (pork 80%) 420g @ £3.00 or 2 for £5.00
Lidl wafer thin smoked ham (pork 86%) 400g @ £1.79.
In fairness and before somebody points it out: YES the Lidl is 20g less. But for an extra 37p you do get an extra 360g.

I think the original posters comments were correct, lidls prices are pretty consistent, tesco/asda there is a lot more deal finding. Lidl doesnt offer everything but it sure as hell does most.

You'd be surprised how quick that queue goes down though.

It's usually folks with piled up trolleys - so no, it doesn't go down quick, lol. And even when the queue reaches critical, they begrudge opening another checkout. It's a shame really.

In all honesty that has never been my experience and I've shopped at around 5 different Lidl stores in my time due to moving around. I guess there's always going to be the exception to the rule though.

Our local Lidsl have improved themselves dramatically in the last few years, they used to be dumps, but are now clean and bright and reasonable well run.

Aldi and Lidl chocolate knocks spots off the cheap stuff in the majors, you can't just compare price, the quality has to be taken into accout too.

They both do FR chickens which are much cheaper than the big stores, and they are very good indeed.

I have found fruit and veg to be fine - when they had them, the apricots in Lidl were delicious because they were actually ripe rather than nasty hard things that you get in supermarkets.

Any savvy shoppers will be being selective about the things they buy now, chasing the bargains in whichever stores, that way you can take the best from each of them. As long as this does not end up costing more in fuel or fares, it can make a big difference to your weekly budget.
Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures

It's 4 pints in lidl for 99p, not 2 litres

I was only going by what miserablesod had to say:-
Also 2 litres of milk is 99p compared to £1.49.

The mainstreams are starting to offer similar prices but lidl / aldi have been consistent for years

    Well;

    (1) Lidl and Aldi are two quite different chains

    (2) The last time (I'm aware of ) that The Grocer ran a comparison that included stores outside the 'Big Five', Aldi came in at £30.76 compared to £20.85 for Tesco, which would make them about 50% more expensive, whilst Lidl came in with the slightly less frightening figure of £25.30. But given the complaints I've seen here on MSE regarding prices in Tesco, perhaps you're right, perhaps they are now "starting to offer similar prices".

In this neck of the woods it is in 2 litres. On offer at 69p at the minute.

Also just popped in to Lidl and picked a few bits and pieces up. Spent £12.82 and have compared on mysupermarket. Tesco: £17.62, Asda: £25.31, Sainsburys: £24.34. Probably not an exact like for like but as close to it as I could.
Well....... I thought it was good!!
