I have the lakeland yogurt maker, its great as long as you can put it in a place where it is not going to be cuaght accidently, I once ended up with really nice cream cheese because I caught the YM with my elbow whilst it was 'cooking'.
Yougart will generally keep for about a week in a fridge........mind you mine disappears very quickly especially if the grandchildren are around. We usually have the plain yogurt on stewed fruit, poached pears or peaches, delicious on strawberries, I have also made yogurt ice cream with strawberries, scrummy......................Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -

I use a little yogurt-maker to make a litre at a time but I think a slow cooker would be great for making larger amounts and I don't usually have anything good to say about slow cookers lol.
8 cups is 64floz or 3 pints + 2oz btw0 -
I've just found a method for making yogurt in the slow cooker and wondered if anybody had tried it, or if it would be useful to anyone. I can't decide if it should go under the yogurt thread or the slow cooker thread?

I have been making yogurt in my slow cooker for several months. I keep it simple, semi skimmed milk - enough to fill the jars to be used, bring it almost to the boil, stirring constantly to kill off any bacteria that may be present, allow to cool (until just warm), pour into the clean jars, add 1 teaspoon of live natural yogurt to each jar (from local supermarket) and put in the slow cooker with about 2 inches of water around the jars. Slow cooker set to "keep warm" setting, put the lid on and forget it for about 5 hours. Family loves it. Save a small amount from this to be the starter on the next batch.0 -

I make my own yoghurt all the day, though in a yoghurt maker not the slow cooker. I've used many varieties of natural yoghurt and all but one have worked. I can't remember which work: but I've used Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons successfully. They don't always say live/bio yoghurt but many are, so its worth a try. Some come out thicker than others: if it's very runny I just make it into a smoothie rather than use as a yoghurt.
PS My mix for yoghurt is a good dollop (say hal a small pot+) of yoghurt, a heap of milk powder (say three tablespoons) mixed with UHT milk (semi skimmed or skimmed). As you can see, I don't do things very precisely.
One other thing, you will find some whey liquid on home made yoghurt sometimes. I used to pour it off but later discovered it's very high in protein (body builders use whey powder for that reason). Now I either mix it in or use in in bread making, as it's excellent for this.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
