Anyone tried this? I fancy trying chicken, yogurt, white wine and tarragon, but don't know if the yogurt would curdle? Yogurt would be a cheaper and less fattening alternative to cream also.
Any advice appreciated.

I found this in the sslow cooker recipe thread.
I have a swan slow cooker and it came with instructions for making yoghurt in it but DH in usual form threw them away with the packaging. Doh!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
How long would this last, though? I would have thought it would be quite difficult to keep stuff in a slow cooker sterile, so you could end up growing something quite different to what you'd intended.0

Gingham Ribbon - there's a slow cooker yoghurt recipe here.Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.2 Samuel 12:23 Romans 8:28 Psalm 30:5

Tawnyowls - the slowcooker process is based on time/temperature combination and because it's a low temperature it will take a long time. Even at a low temp (c.65 ºC), the long cooking process is enough to kill off the pathogenic bacteria
Yogurt as a product isn't sterile anyway and if you think about it, doesn't really go off as such, but gets progressively sourer.
Hope this helps?0 -

I've just found a method for making yogurt in the slow cooker and wondered if anybody had tried it, or if it would be useful to anyone. I can't decide if it should go under the yogurt thread or the slow cooker thread?

That is indeed really useful - I am thinking about getting a yoghurt maker, but already have a slow cooker. It never occured to me to use it for yoghurt making! Thank you! :T
Just read it through - am confused by the amount of starter needed. She starts off saying use 1/2 cup yoghurt as a starter. Then she says only to use 1/2 of that to mix with the 2 cups of yoghurt???Life is not a dress rehearsal.0 -
Thats not what she means, I think what she is saying is mix 1/2cup of commercial yogurt with the milk and than add it back to the warm milk in the crock pot, stir in, then cover, wrap the crock pot in a heavy towel and leave for 8 hours or over night.......Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0

Thanks Csarina, that does make more sense. Thing is though, I like gadgets so I think the Lakeland yoghurt maker is still on the cards - saves messing around with bath towels, timing the slow cooker etc. But may be worth a try!Life is not a dress rehearsal.0
