    Mortgage-free Glee!
I only have two and a half drawers of freezer, so have to keep quite a tight ship! As others have suggested, I keep a list on the door so I don't end up leaving the door open while I root around trying to find something for dinner! Then things get crossed off as they are used.

I also write the date I have frozen items (I unpack items from the bulky packaging and split into meal-sized portions. This enables me to use the older stuff first to stop stuff drying out too quickly.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

top flip down bit is homemade icecream, lollies and ice.
first drawer is frozen veg and blackberries.
next drawer is meat, we buy from a farm once a month. any chicken breasts are packaged individually when i get them so i can just defrost them one at a time,
flip down thing below is for bread/ rolls.

wellll thats the theory anyhow lol

my freezer is full of homemade ice cream that is too rich to eat more than a mouthful at a time and takes about 3 hours to defrost enough to eat that one mouthful. I also have a pack of spicy pork steaks that have been on my 'to eat this week' list for over a year. and one lonely tesco value battered mushroom.
I hate to throw things away.

I would do but the microwave has been condemned. I haven't got rid of it though, i keep thinking the rust might evaporate of its own accord!

I like to keep on top of my freezer contents with regular freezer inventories...but its not always easy. I rely on being able to recognise things in their dishes so very rarely bother to label things (I guess I just like the challenge!!). For the majority of the time, I turn out to be right - but on the odd occasion I get it wrong, it means we discover some weird and wonderful dish that we have probably never put together before! :rotfl:

I do try to double-batch-cook food and freeze for days when work is tough and time is short. In our house, the freezer is filled with things which are either home made and frozen, or things which are yellow-stickered and therefore a bargain. However, we do have a saying for the yellow-stickered things which will never get eaten, (but get bought because they seem like such a bargain... We call them "pork parcels" (this stems from something purchased way back in 1994(!!) when we were at college - we bought these "pork parcels" because they were reduced, but never ate them because they sounded/looked so disgusting - we bought them in the first week of the autumn term and ended up throwing them away the following July!!:o). Since then, everything of that ilk has been referred to as a pork parcel - even our parents and friends have picked up on it - all our family/friends know our shortcomings and we are famous for our one-time wasteful ways!!

I hasten to add, these days we are more known for turning our leftovers into a nutritious meal, but still the stigma sticks...!

  • I had a four drawer under the counter freezer and got an amercian one so I could have more space for bargains, home cooking and allotment produce. Although it's capacity is much more I'm finding it a pain to stack and organize. It has shelves and side pockets not drawers so you can't get to the stuff at the back easily, its difficult to find anything thin and high enough to make full use of the pockets and you can't fill right to the front (you know how every inch of a basket can be stuffed with small stuff) because they all fall out when you open the door.
Anyone else got one of these?
    Any tips?

You could look out for supermarket cardboard boxes that fit (or make them fit by cutting and taping) and work like drawers. This will hold the cold air too, so you don't lose the cold air when you open the doors.

For the 'pockets', could you use hefty carrier bags to line them?

In light of the horrible price hikes, I'm going to do a lot of batch cooking and freezing next month with the help of my slow cooker. I just wondered how other people marked up their bags/boxes ready to pop in the freezer?

Since getting married, I've found my freezer isn;t really suitable for more than one person, but as we have no room for anything esle I am stck with it.

I have a fridge/freezer and the freezer is only two shelves.

I wondered if I could get some baskets somewhere to go in it that might help me pack more in? or does anyone have any tips on how to organise my two meagre shelves so I can fit enough food in?

I like to batch cook meals if possible and freeze them but there just isn;t room!

    Curse my tiny kitchen :(
