I guess you can't see the reason why. With a type written one, you can use a spell checker, punctuation and grammar checker. With hand written you are less likely to and it is more likely your true level of literacy will show, not the one dependent on the quality of the word processing software you use.
I can see reasons for wanting a hand-written application - for instance those who believe in graphology want hand-written applications.
What you don't seem to be able to see is that the recruiter was asking, according to your post, for an application to be written. Type-written fits the bill of written. (That compares with people who phone and want to apply for positions.)0 -
While this kind of test will filter against people who write poorly, it will filter in all of the devious people towards the front of the queue, in a way which a word processed application would not ...I guess you can't see the reason why. "the bottom line is that an employer has to be satisfied a person is who they say they are & are entitled to work in the UK. Sure an expired passport & possibly one other secondary form of ID should be more than enough to ascertain who someone is and to confirm someone's rights to work in the UK?"
Hi, the Pedant.
Employers don't just have to satisfy themselves. This is covered by law and there is a list of acceptable IDs they are permitted to accept - you can see it on the Border Agency website if you like. No variation is allowed and employers face big fines for getting it wrong, so employers have no powers of discretion in this.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Where I work we have to provide a copy of our (valid) passport every 2 years. There is a list of alternatives if you don't have a passport, but I'm pretty sure it all has to be valid... I'm not sure why every 2 years for those staff who are full British citizens, but it is a large company and I guess it is a blanket rule to make HR life easier.0

A passport is only used to prove your ID that you are English etc - therefore an expired one doesnt say that you are no longer of that nationality..just that you havent recently paid the 100 quid or so to prove you are English.. which tbh I really object to having to do.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

in my experience they do. most of them dont even list a postal address on their ads or often a company location or name( taking my local paper into account here)Oldernotwiser wrote: »No they don't.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Not true, it proves your identity, not just your nationality and that you are entitled to a BRITISH passport. If your face doesn't change over 10 years then congratulate your surgeon!0 -

You could, however also hold a foreign passport (dual nationality) if your other passport is valid and your British one is not they can claim that you are now officially a national of X country and have to prove your right to work.0 -
mine hasnt...i look just the same now as I did many years ago - its one of the joys of being ugly.:psaintjammyswine wrote: »Not true, it proves your identity, not just your nationality and that you are entitled to a BRITISH passport. I was sad enough to trawl through Businesslink and from there to the UKBA website.
My reading of this is that the employer COULD have accepted an out of date passport as evidence of Right to Work (as I have myself with other suitable checks), but that they are not obliged to do so.Validity of Documents
The UK Border Agency recommends that employers check the in-date passports/travel documents of their prospective employees. However, if the prospective employee does not have an in-date passport/travel document, you can accept evidence of permission to remain in the UK – and therefore right to work - in an expired passport or travel document. It is crucial that you check that the
stamp or endorsement in the passport/travel document continues to allow the person to work by virtue of status (ie the person’s stay is
indefinite) or date (the end of the person’s permitted stay has not expired).
Employers are advised to see any prospective employee’s current passport/travel document. If you have to rely solely on an expired passport/travel document containing evidence of the prospective employee’s permission to remain in the UK, you must take particular care when examining photographs and comparing these with the current appearance of the prospective employee. Also, you should have regard to the date of birth on the expired document and satisfy yourself that this is consistent with the current appearance of the prospective employee.Signature removed for peace of mind0
