with respect, this employer needs to move with the times as well! Handwritten applications ??!! I know handwritten letter was the norm along with a typewritten application when I left school but that was almost 30 years ago!!!
Most people would fill in an application form by hand, surely?0 -

Well no they don't, do they. Some do, some don't. So much generalising on this thread its not true. If an application asks for written, write it !!!!!! - what's not to understand?

I worked for a huge company in UK for 2 decades. The first 15 years were spent in UK, then they sent me on an overseas posting....still officially employed by UK company.
When I returned - recalled by the UK company- they insisted on seeing my passport, before I could resume working in UK.
This I found weird as I had officially worked for them for the whole time I was overseas, but apparently it is the law to prove that you are eligible to work in UK.
(I guess because my service was long standing, before changes in the law) I could have refused, but it seemed pointless.
So being asked to provide passport/original long birth cert etc, is a right of passage with all new employment.0 -
It is entirely down to policy.An expired passport (or driving licence, for that matter) is not acceptable as ID.
Most airlines operating domestic flights accept expired passports as a valid form of identification (for intenal flights) up to 2 years after expiry. If airlines accept them, I can't see why an employer should not. Surely if it's good enough for airlines then an employer should accept them too?
the bottom line is that an employer has to be satisfied a person is who they say they are & are entitled to work in the UK. Sure an expired passport & possibly one other secondary form of ID should be more than enough to ascertain who someone is and to confirm someone's rights to work in the UK?0 -

I guess you can't see the reason why. With a type written one, you can use a spell checker, punctuation and grammar checker. With hand written you are less likely to and it is more likely your true level of literacy will show, not the one dependent on the quality of the word processing software you use.0 -

My first thought is that its nothing to do with a passport expiring but your daughters age. I'm very surprised she got a job in a large firm as she's under 18.
And??? You can leave school and work full time at 16. That is absolute rubbish, and whats more age discrimination. This employer is totally unreasonable.
If it were me I'd go to the meeting as offered and very calmly say that I am disappointed in the way the daughter has been treated. If they aren't acceptably contrite at the meeting I might hint that the local paper might be interested in the story.
It's not unreasonable at all! If they are asking for something and she can't comply, it's her own stupid fault, not the employer's.
And as for going to the press, I doubt they would be at all interested. I can see the headline now "shop sacks stupid teenager who cannot follow instructions!"Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0
