Ah now, Sheffield's a different one again...it's known locally as "de-dah" land.

    Q. De do do dat dare don't de (they do do that there, don't they?)

    A. De do da noz (they do you know)

PS: it's "tha noz", not "tha knows". ;)
  • Please don't blame teachers for people having crap grammar! I spent twenty minutes the other day teaching my Year 10 class (age 14-15) how to use a possessive apostrophe. Now I know for a FACT this is not the first time they have been taught this; in fact I intended it only as a quick review but it soom became clear they didn't have a clue, despite this being a basic I know will have been covered many times in their school career. So I explained it all, gave them examples and some sentences to correct, and carried on with the lesson. I took in the writing they had been doing...only to find that at least half the pieces had possessive apostrophes used incorrectly. There is no way they could say they hadn't been told how to use them! Sometimes I really despair.

    Thee's a clever person ;) (Or is it 'thy's?)
Er, neither. "Thou art a clever person" I think.

Ah, now I can introduce another word....

It's actually "thara", as in "thara clever ******* thee" (I don't care for your sarcasm) and "thara reight 'un thee" (you're a fine one to talk!)

On a slightly different tack, the language used in programmes on TV - it really does bug me that in "Corrie" they talk of "Mah-in" (Martin), and "Kah-ie" (Katy), and in "Eastenders" they state "yous all get over there right now" or "yous 'ave to do that". This does have a knock-on effect on the way youngsters speak these days.

But, it wouldn't be very realistic if Corrie and Stenders types were all talking the Queen's English. (Whether the programme as a whole is realistic is another issue...)

It annoys me when they put extra words in

eg "What we do see" instead of "what we see", it sounds ridiculous to me, I have also noticed that quite a few of the local newsreaders drop their aitches all over the place and put them where they are not required, eg has when they mean as...
I have seen spelling and grammatical mistakes on letters from school, and it's a grammar school (??) and of course some of the teachers will have been part of the great creativity experiment where spelling is not corrected.

What annoys me is when newsreaders are using an autocue which is obviously not turning at the correct speed for their delivery, they run sentences into eachother with all the pauses in the wrong places, and then someone..gets..wise....to....the......problem.....and ......the.......whole........
    thing........slows......down.......to.........a........crawl......and.......fizzles.......ou..............t!
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
