What can I do with horseradish sauce?

Options
I have three quarters of a jar of horseradish sauce left, I was just wondering if you clever guys had any ideas how to use this up apart from with roast beef or steak?
As it has quite a strong taste, could I add this to curries? stews? Would it be nice with chicken?
Any ideas welcome...
Happy New Year folks....:j

I wouldn't put it in curries/stews - think you'd lose the flavour. It's good in mashed potatoes though.

  • Yeah, it's awesome in mashed potatoes. Also, if you like carrots and parsnips, trying mashing them with the horseradish as well.

  • Seems to be used mostly as a side sauce in salad dressings/salsas etc but isn't horseradish the basis of tartare sauce? In which case I'd serve it with fish (wasabi used in sushi is a very potent form of Japanese horseradish).

I use horseradish sauce in smoked mackerel pate. It's the easiest thing in the whole world!

2 smoked mackerel fillets, skinned and flaked
    about 1/2 oz butter
    1-2 tsp horseradish (to taste)
    2 tsp lemon juice
    milk, or single cream

You can either use a processor, or I just use a fork. Mix the top 4 ingedients together until the mackerel is as flaked as you'd like. Then add milk or cream, until it's a pate like consistency. This is so yummy on toast for a special breakfast!

Whilst the yummy sounding pate above uses horseradish in a fish dish, horseradish is not usually an ingredient in tartare sauceas far as I know. Gherkins and capers are used in tartare sauce.

But it might be good with fish - just never tried it

I use Horseradish in making chilli and it helps make fab Tuna burgers -
Fresh Tuna (I work on about 150-200g per portion you want to make) chopped finely or minced in a machine, add finely chopped spring onion and mix well with decent quantity of Horseradish sauce to bind it* - squeeze out very hard (sometimes a lot of liquid comes out) and form into patty shapes and I usually fry in non-stick pan. Serve as burger in a bun

    * I'll use 2-4 tsp of Hot Horseradish sauce, much more if it's creamed horseradish.

I view it in a similar way to mustard! Horseradish and cheese

You could try adding a blob to shortcrust pastry and reducing the water by the same amount to make a pokey pastry for a savoury pie. I have added it when making Savoury Mince or Scotch Mince to give that a bit of poke/bite too.

Horseradish and smoked mackeral is  forget the pate!

I'm a bit weird in that I would serve it with chicken/pork/lamb and beef, depending on what I had. If you like it, you like it!

If you think of beef products, such as hm burgers, sausages, have it with those.

I love horseradish sauce mixed with creme fraiche as a sauce or trout! It's equally as good with salmon and the creme fraiche means that it's not hot at all.

    That's wierd :)
I've just done homemade salmon fishcakes for tea and couldnt find any sauce to go with it... hubby likes just plain old vinegar... soooo...
I mixed up a bit of mayo left in the bottom of a jar and the same in horseradish sauce... and it was lush!!! :)
I recommend it to all... and it used the leftovers from Christmas (which seems such a long time ago now!)
