they never asked me why?

Options
i have been with my bank about 19 years. Recently i changed bank accounts and went into my bank to close my account down, hand in the form etc.

The person i spoke to never said anything about me closing it down etc? It made it easier for me really but i would have thought they might have said something?

Your thoughts please?

    Perhaps they couldn't be bothered?

I don't believe branch staff (in most banks) are targeted on retention of existing business. Most banks do have retentions procedures in place, but there may be little gain in following through in what could be a lengthy conversation. There's no excuse obviously, but if I were on near minimum wage and made up my salary with sales bonus, I'd be more interested in flogging a credit card.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

I think Jambosans is exactly right - if it isn't going to help them hit their targets its easy for them not to really care.
  • These days everyone is so busy changing their house/car insurance, changing their savings accounts to the latest higher interest ones, so customer loyality counts for little.
A far cry from the days when to get a mortgage you needed a track record or saving with a particular building society over many years!

Many organisations seem to actively encourage new customers while at the same time discouraging existing ones from continuing their business with them with poor renewal rates (savings/insurance etc)

So they have come to expect their 'customers' to come and go.

Sad to say your business as an individual really isn't that important to them. Now if you were removing a £20million account from them I'd expect they would be ushering you into a private room to discuss your concerns and what they could do for you......

Nah, more likely shoved in a room with the Financial Adviser while they get head office authority to draw the cheque.

    Fixed for you ;)
  • Reddevil - if you are bothered as to why they did not seem to care about you closing your account why did you not ask to speak to someone before opening a new account?
In my experience any new bank worth their salt would transfer your old bank account for you - why did you have to do this manually?

Whilst a new bank will transfer the DDs and SOs for you, I haven't had one which actually closed the old account.

Some (eg Alliance & Leicester) seem to require the account holder to present themselves at a branch in order to close a current account.

Most banks these days have specialist teams to transfer accounts and d/d etc including closing the old accounts.

They dont close the old account down automatically, you have to do that.
