How do you split expenses in your household?

I know a couple - now separated - where she would go on holiday and leave him at home "because he hadn't earned enough to save for a holiday this year". He had been a stay-at-home Dad while she'd pursued her career.
When she got back, she would have got back to an empty house, the kids and I would have been gone.lol
Did she take the kids or did she pay OH going nanny rate?0 -
We are the same , day to day purchases we are just sensible . However if one month I decided I wanted a new PC or an iPad 2 we would just mention it to each other to decide if we could afford it.
I agree - when I said we spend what we want to send, I meant in the books / haircuts / etc line. We tend to discuss larger purchases first....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Just because money are in three different accounts it doesn't mean that people half everything... That is very strange way of looking at it. It just means that there is a bit more freedom in the way we spend - ie we don't need to check with each other before getting an expensive hair cut or something!
You can have entirely joint finances, though, without checking with the other half about spending....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
We have a joint account for all household bills and also our own accounts, our wages get paid into our accounts and we each move an amount into the joint account monthly to cover the bills. Anything left in our sole accounts after that transfer is ours to do with as we please.
Mind you, I start maternity leave next week and poor old hubs is going to be paying all the bills while my mat pay will be for food/nappy shopping and if there is anything left over the odd treat for us both - not sure the poor s0d knows what's about to hit him, no more £70 nights out on the drink for him lol (may I add that I have never begrudged him those - he works long hours for good pay, has always covered more than half of the bills and is equally generous with treats and nights out at the cinema etc. for the both of us!)0
