For the tablet buy a Gig of Three data for £4, it is a bundle in itself so AFAIK it should work from the off in the USA.

One of the reviews of this SIM on the Curry site says
"Using in whilst on holiday in USA. Works a treat, saved me a fortune"0 -
Just noticed that o2 have now launched "o2 travel data" where one can use "unlimited data" for £1.99/day.
Has anyone used this? Has one used it to tether with?0 -
Didn't read somewhere that O2 were doing unlimited EU roaming data ?0

As far as I am aware for £2 a day o2 gives you roaming, including data at your Uk contract home rate0 -

How difficult was that?
For contracts. PAYG is limited.0 -

In the original post it does not say that it is just for contract customer.
I have PAYG with O2 and I am already aware that you only get 100MB data for £1.99 a day, therefore get surprise for unlimited for £1.99 a day, so asking ....
If you are already in contract with O2 and then still need to pay £1.99 a day to use it abroad I could not see how come this one is a good deal. You could get Three feel at home and use your contract allowance as if you were in the UK.0 -
The advice to buy a local SIM on arrival assumes that there is both the level of competition for your business that exists here and that the SIMS are cheap.
I have recently returned from backpacking in Belgium and France.
I loaded my iPhone with a couple of PAYG SIMs from Vodaphone which ceased working as soon as I hit France.
I managed to find an Orange store and bought 3 x 15Euro PAYG SIMS; I was assured they would work in France, too. (The big local operator (PROXIMUS) never seemed to open their stores when I was in town.) As soon as I crossed to France they stopped working. I bought another PAYG SIM from an Orange shop (30Euro) which should have done me several weeks, I was assured. I have 1 Euro credit left. I don't understand why the French Orange PAYG SIM works in England, but the equivalent Belgian one did not work in France.
I have to return in the spring to France. I reckon paying for a full on as much as you can eat plan will be the only way to go.
I run an iPhone 5s with Facetime to talk to my wife.

If you need speed, you can stick with your Orange France SIM: http://boutique.orange.fr/mobile/recharges-mobicarte
Three UK's Feel At Home service is the cheapest, but utilises traffic shaping.
