  • I have used parsnip peelings that I would normally compost to make a very tasty spicy parsnip soup tonight.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

I was brought up to use the green parts of spring onions too. when I first saw chefs on TV throw it away I was horrified! are they mad? the green is full of flavour too - and makes a very acceptable alternative to chives!

Thanks Frugalista for the welcome and warning re the blog link. I can't figure out how to put it on my profile page; is there an FAQ anywhere that explains how?

    I need leftovers help!

I made a vegetable curry last night with stuff that I had lying around (trying to be a good OS moneysaver and using things up!). Unfortunately while not exactly unpleasant, it turned out rather bland, boring and insipid. But I've got loads left!

Main ingredients were: onion, lots of spices, natural yoghurt, chick peas, tinned tomatoes, sweet potatoes and courgettes.

What I need is inspiration on how to take a cooked boring vegetable curry and turn it into something nice that we can look forward to eating! I REFUSE to throw it away but I know OH will find excuse after excuse to avoid eating it again unless I do something very spangly with it.

    Any ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks Squeaky. I completely blanked on that when I joined.

That reminds me, we save the peel from lemons, oranges and limes and stash in the freezer for adding to jugs of Pimms in the summer.

Broccoli stalks are thinly sliced and secreted in stirfries etc, my family are suspicious of the stalks, you'd think they were poisonous!

The oil left in the jar after sundried toms/olives is really flavoursome and great for adding to tinned tomatoes for a pasta/pizza sauce and yet I've caught my mother binning it!

Oh and any odd scraps of bread go into the bread stash in the freezer, I have a raw pastry stash as well. I hate throwing anything away now, it is such a waste; and of course the smugness that comes with my newly found frugalism is priceless:D
  • I put all my stalks, leaves, peelings, off-cuts etc in a tupperware tub in the fridge and make soup at the weekend. Even if the weather's too hot to eat it it goes in the freezer for later. I also freeze orange peel & left over lemons (after squeezing) for when I next make marmalade.

My mum saves her lemon skins and makes lemonade with them. After that she pulverises them in her food processor and uses it in her lemon meringues.

I freeze any dry bread (which is quite rare for us as we are a greedy household) for bread crumbs for use in meat balls.

I always save my veggie water from the steamer for soup and stock.
