  • we waste more than we should as l am ill & OH is similar to the typical bloke many ladies on these boards mention,ie a bit too brand orientated, wasteful & there are a lot of things he turns his nose up at including leftovers(anything not just opened by him lol).so l said today that l'd spoil him cos he's had to clean up so much after plumbing disasters-3 times in a row!(turned out they had to dig up a lot of garden to replace a cracked waste pipe,joy!!!).so;3 eggs, mixed with uht milk to create vegetable scrambly eggs from nearly dead veg which he was going to chuck, the heel of dried up goats cheese which he wouldn't go near, the waste for stock, some of the veg saved for risotto tomorrow & a pudding with 1/2 a jar of bottled cherries(which he's adamant he doesn't like & won't eat)stirred into a bit of melted choc(his achilles heel..) which was in the fridge & would've got thrown cos the packaging had got fridge gloop on it & the juice boiled up as sauce!sorry to go on but am sooo pleased with myself lol!
ooh,AND new yogurt got bought & no one would eat the old ones so they went down the sewage to restart the bacteria that got killed by the unblocking sewage stuff!yay me lol.

Hmm can be a bit guility of this - do tend to throw away a bit... Used to throw away more, but only tend to buy what we need now. Still have 2 freezers full of food so are starting to eat more from that.

Had to throw away 500g of mince yesterday - a day before it's use by it smelt distinctly dodgy!!!!

    I hate throwing food away!

Will now have to economise as it would have done 4 meals for me.

I know exactly what you mean - I had to do the same with a pack of chicken the other week and it is still annoying me!!!!!!

Feeling quite pleased with myself today, as although I felt quite sick this morning I still managed to chop up & 'seal' a pack of stewing steak which I defrosted overnight, and put it in the slow cooker with a jar of bourginon sauce (bought cheap ages ago & been lingering in the cupboard) before I went to work.
Didn't get as far as adding the 'leftover fridge veg' as I'd planned, but I will chop them small and fry them up, then add to rice for 'vegetable rice' to go with the bougignon, and DH won't know, LOL!

The only waste this week was a small pack of cooked rice which I defrosted to have for my lunch with some salad, but I was feeling dodgy and didn't eat, and as I went to bed when I got home DH fended for himself!

Have a feeling there will be a lump of mature stilton going early next week though, as DH doesn't eat it and as I may be PG I daren't - will try to find someone to give it to!

Argh! Discovered this morning that the bottom of our fridge has gone ridiculolusly cold and that I had a handful of almost frozen carrots down there so they are now sitting waiting for the next trip to the compost bin. I've shifted the thermometer down there so I can see if the temperature setting needs adjustment.

Ours does that - why compost them? I just chop them and boil them

Hmmm....I probably should have done really, they did go a bit unpleasant when they thawed out though!

I'm a bit cross with myself - Mum & I hit the market (in Walthamstow where we used to live) on Saturday - I saw one of our old friends from one of the fruit and veg stalls and came back with a load of cherry tomatoes dirt cheap (all slow roasted and turned into Sauce - now in the freezer) Mum got a bag full of apples which are now stewed and frozen, and I got four galia melons for £1 - plan was that OH and I would have them as part of our lunches throughout the week - saving the apples I'd already bought for next week...needless to say OH has still been taking his apple each day, and worse than that - three of the melons got left sitting in a plastic bag and have now gone mouldy in spots. I will have to disect them tonight I think and see if there is anything salvageable for tomorrow lunch at least. Grr!

I freeze mine and then use it in broccoli & blue cheese soup :)

** ah, just deciphered pg as pregnant? congrats if you are. I can see why you don't want to eat it. None of our family eats any blue cheese (that's why it goes into the freezer when I buy the reduced cheeseboards after Christmas) but all like it in soup!**

You should have taken it back to the shop, or at least phoned them to say that there was a problem. I've had to do that before, I just suggest that maybe it had been sitting out a bit too long before being put on the shelves. I've always been refunded.

  • Found quite a lot of frozen vege in the freezer from earlier in the year so needs to be used up , leeks, carrots, mixed, cabbage etc.
Any ideas how i can use these up - plan is to work my way though the freezer /cuboards and use everything up.
( no work for 7 weeks and no sign of anything yet so a bit skint at the moment - resorted to using £1 mitchum vouchers at tescoes and going to several tills in one shop so can 'buy' anything for £1 or just over )
    Any help appreciated.
