To even ask for your address you'd have to be asked whilst *on* the train.... there is no way to prove you didn't have a ticket when you were on it, after the fact
Can you provide any source as to verify any of your claims?0 -

Passengers should retain their tickets until they have left their destination station - them's the rules.0 -

Can I ask where that's from as I had left the destination station and was on a pubic highway when I was stopped. So in theory as I had left the station I had no reason to have a ticket maybe that's why I got let off.0 -

I suggest you post on RailUK forum where you will be told the truth rather than ill-informed rubbish.
You can be stopped outside a station, indeed many pavements/carparks are railway property.
(Some) Ticket inspectors do have the power to caution/detail you. Failure to provide your correct details is a criminal offence.0 -

Why would I post on a forum with a lot of railway employees I'm sure they would have listened to my side of the story. As to the rest of your post @the groat counter hasnt posted back with any details so I can't comment on whether your right or wrong as I don't know.0 -

Actually not all the people on Rail uk are railway employees so your wrong there.
Plus you will actually get the best and most knowledgeable advice from there also as it is a specialist website dedicated to the railway rather then here where anyone can spout whatever they want with - in the most part - not a clue about what they are on about.

Sorry, insufficient info to provide advice! A lot more information would be required, however the information we would need would be substantial and possibly allow you to be 'traced'.ninja99boy wrote: »...I jumped on the train without paying, everything went ok until I was leaving the station then I was caught by a plain-clothes Revenue Protection Officer without a ticket....
We'd need the origin, destination, train company used, and the state of any ticket facilities at the origin at the time you arrived.
That's incorrect information, and on the RailUK forum a post like this would be deleted very rapidly indeed.Fantastic....evading paying for a fare is not a criminal offence you don't get a fine for it but giving a false name and address is. Did the RPO not check the information you gave was correct? I have few suggestions. Don't do it again and keep quiet about it.
I suspect you may have a different railway line in mind than what the OP travelled on. We do not have sufficient information to believe it is reasonable that someone could have left a ticket on the train. But the OP admits he travelled without a ticket, so I have to ask - what relevance does this point have? Honestly?stayingupright wrote: »I wouldn't have thought that the revenue officer had any powers at all - he certainly couldn't prove anything... leaving a station without a ticket is NOT a crime, the amount of times I've caught a train & discarded the ticket when no longer needed is numerous.
Yes, you can leave a station without a ticket as you may not have travelled but The RPI can ask if you had arrived on the train, if you lie then the hole gets much deeper. I would suggest that a statement such as "leaving a station without a ticket is NOT a crime" while not incorrect, simply lacks relevance here!
Erm, is it? I think it rather depends on the circumstances - which we do not know!The_Groat_Counter wrote: »Passengers should retain their tickets until they have left their destination station - them's the rules.
Agreed. If the OP wishes for the matter to be discussed there, that is an option. Some of the posters here post absolute rubbish, and there is very little evidence of sufficient moderation for anyone seeking advice to have any confidence that the advice given is accurate and reliable!WickedWolfie wrote: »I suggest you post on RailUK forum where you will be told the truth rather than ill-informed rubbish.
That's libel. Please remove your remark, and apologise, or I will consider what action to take.ninja99boy wrote: »Why would I post on a <removed> forum
We have a number of railway employees, though the forum is not "full" of railway employees and the vast majority of whom are in fact extremely helpful.ninja99boy wrote: »full of railway employees
We would.ninja99boy wrote: »I'm sure they would have listened to my side of the story.

Let me explain why I said that remark. Before I posted here I did my research on where would be the best place to post where people would listen to my side of the story and not just give me a lecture; MSE or Railuk or Cag. What put me off Railuk was the thread on megatrain tickets where everybody seemed to gang up on the person who started the thread and not listen to his side of the story. I didnt think i would be safe as a newbie on there. But your right I shouldn't have made such unfounded comment without evidence to which I apologise. But to be honest Ive got the info I need so wont be posting again.0 -

I think you're being overly harsh on yourself.evading paying for a fare is not a criminal offence
I would be very careful with such a statement because you could land the OP in more trouble.giving a false name and address is.
This is correct.
There are a number of issues that could affect the legality of what happened depending on when and where the OP started his journey, the status of ticket purchasing facilities at the origin station, which TOC the OP travelled with, what happened during the journey, what happened at the destination station, and what was said during the conversation between the OP and the RPI, to name a few. There simply is not enough information in this thread for anyone to be able to make any meaningful comments on this matter.
I would advise the OP not to do this again, whatever the outcome of this case. Although it might seem insignificant at the time, the consequence could be much more severe than you might expect. I, like yorkie has said, am unable to say any more regarding this matter as there is simply not enough details to make an informed comment. Far too many people have made general sweeping statements in this thread that are either irrelevant, or completely incorrect.ninja99boy wrote: »Why would I post on an ****####$$$$ forum full of railway employees
Have you actually been on the forum before? I would recommend thinking, and indeed visiting in this case, before speaking. Thank you for bringing our attention to these issues that we have on RailUK, which we are definitely not aware of. We will be in touch with everyone who we have helped out of difficult situations before and ask for their opinion on these descriptors.
Edit: I have just seen your reply to yorkie above. I wish you luck in sorting the matter out, however as I said above, learn your lesson and don't do this again.0
