Just moved to another job from Santander, the OP's story is true, this happened to a number of people and a number of internal communications were sent out about it, the reason for it is that this was a rather large !!!!-up given Santander's reputation for being an extremely careful lender.

Recently opened satander preferred account. They have just sent me £25 amazon voucher. This is first time I have got anything free from banks other than £5 from Halifax rewards account per month that is.0
