Anybody able to explain the mechanics of "because the payslip said £1700 then the automatic payout machine which counts the cash counted £1700".

How does it read the payslip? How are the note denominations verified?
  • I only counted the money when i got out of the bank. The machine counted £1200. but my statement shows £1700....

Why would i go to all the trouble if ive stole the money???? they have taken £1700 from my account but only given me £1200 as I requested.

Don't go down that route, concentrate on the procedure and the mechanics.

..........But if the machine counted £1700 and OP was given £1700 isn't he trying to steal £500?

No , because we don't know for a fact whether the machine counted 1700 OR that he was given 1700 (or that he wrote 1200 or 1700 on the withdrawal slip until he gets a hard copy of it).
If you will the end, you must will the means.

I know I have done wrong by not counting the cash at the very point of being given it, but I do not understand why the statement shows £1700 being deducted from my account but only £1200 being counted and given by the automatic counting machine....

Because - theoretically - you could be asking for another £500 from the branch, putting you up an extra 500 of the Queen's finest.

Surely the machine or the cashier would be up £500 on that nights taking before the branch was balanced? It should've been picked up at the end of play that night, or on whatever day the automated teller is manually checked/balanced. Meaning there should be a paper trail of the balances that the branch can investigate.

The withdrawal slip is dropped in to a counter reader and 'reads' the voucher - it quite often misreads them!
However if the slip was processed as £1700 and the machine counted out £1700 unless the till was wrong by £500 someone is telling porkies.

To be fairly honest, £500 is £500. the principle of the fact is i wouldn't go through all this trouble to get another £500 i'm not entitled to.

I could be here all day telling you how honest I am etc... i'm only looking for good advice on a genuine problem i have at the moment

I'm trying get my own money back because somewhere or something has gone wrong when doing the transaction in the branch.

Well as we've suggested, your first move is to get a hard copy of your withdrawal slip. When you have that, if it says 1200, then ask the bank to explain why it says 1700 on your statement. It's as simple as that.
