    My goodness ,
I forget how helpful you can all be on here,

Minxz, thanks for the coolbox idea ,might just cook a small batch of veggie meals to keep her going for the first week ,though not too many to fill out the freezer !! thanks also for the book suggestions, will have a browse at those later.

Person -one , good point about not taking up all cupboard space !!, we had planned to give her a box to store excess rations !! in her room.
Minerva , its nice to see that you really appreciated your parent generosity.
Melancholly, when you commented about food going missing ,as being a common cause of rows with flatmates,it reminded me of a friends daughter who on returning back to halls found her beloved Nutella jar missing . she was not (or should I say NUT) a happy bunny ..... excuse me for sounding really green, but why do you need extra money for freshers week ? is it for drink ? or do you need money to join clubs etc

    regards Jazz
  • We are going through the same with our eldest son, who leaves for Uni next month too.
We have agreed to give him £200 per month to cover his expenses and will pay his mobile bill so he has no excuse for not keeping in touch!!

I'd say extra money during Fresher's week would be for fresher's events that the student's union tend to run (not all involving lots of drink!) as these are a great opportunity to really meet new people and for any club or society memberships etc (these aren't generally a lot but it can all add up and for me joining a society which I then went on to run was an invaluable experience!).

I was lucky enough to have help off my parents where they paid some (although not all) towards my accommodation which meant I had money spare from my loan once I paid the rest and bills which I was incredibly grateful for. I also put some textbooks on my 'Christmas list' which helped a lot as some of mine proved pretty expensive. I'd say £200 should work out well. Hope she has a fab time in uni, it really is an amazing opportunity! :)

We gave an allowance too but also occasionally sent a Tesco/Asda delivery for heavy stuff as the supermarket was a distance away.

I agree with this but would also add that most uni societies will let you sign up to their mailing list and you won't necessarily have to pay until you've been to the first meeting or two. I'd suggest going on the mailing lists for as many societies as possible at Freshers' Fair and then going to meetings for the ones you really like the look of - they will try and get the money out of you at Freshers' Fair (I know, I worked a society's stall for two years) but don't pay up unless you're absolutely sure it's what you want as they're not cheap!

Remember that she'll only have at the most one kitchen cupboard and one shelf in the fridge and freezer if she's sharing with others. Don't install her with enough food to fill the kitchen and leave no storage space for anyone else, that's not the best way to hit it off with your new flatmates!

My mum stocked my up on a lot of tins and dried goods at the start of term when I managed to get a lift to uni - this I kept mainly under my bed in banana boxes and restocked my cupboard as and when - meaning I only really had to buy fresh f&V etc to add to this.
