I assumed that given the size of the car, the 318i version would struggle a little? Didn't know it was a 2L engine though

I'm about to be a dad, I can forgo having a speed machine for a few years I think :)

I won't be doing very many miles at all I wouldn't think, I commute to work every day so the wife will drive it more than I will*

Certainly under 10k per year anyway

*speaking of which, what are these like for a small, not particularly confident-in-a-car woman to drive? Hope I'm not being sexist here, she's used to a Hyundai Getz is all!

the 318i would certainly be cheaper - I've got to be honest it wouldn't be my choice (as mentioned before I'd buy something non "premium" for the same money if I couldn't have a decent engine) but I can see why you might look at it.

My father had a 2.0 z4 which will be in a slightly higher state of tune than the 2 litre in the 318 but it was a good little car, done just over 40mpg on average. Ok that's a smaller and lighter car but you may see similar mpg in the lower state of tune

At under 10k miles pa and with a non confident second driver I would be very tempted with something like the 318 petrol E90 model. There are several different engine variants ddepending on year and they can range from 127bhp to 143bhp and very different performance and emmissions so do check what you are buying. Your budget is unlikely to stretch to the newer 140bhp versions I wouldn't think

I still wouldn't dismiss the 320d mentioned earlier if you can find one in your budget and take into account the swirl flap issue quite rightly pointed out above. The performance and economy advantages over even the 318i are noticeable even if you are doing kess than 10k pa as you won't be paying the new car premium

Finally if the primary reason is as an estate car there are far better estate cars out there from a practical point of view I would add
