Anybody own a BMW 330D?

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone owns a fairly recent (2007 onwards) BMW 330D and can comment on real world fuel economy?

BMW's stated figures are staggeringly good given the performance of this car but I would love to get a real world view from an owner.

As with any perforamce deisel, you tend to use the performance. Which obviously drops the MPG figures.

On a run I'd expect mid/late 40's and perhaps mid 30's around town?

I can make a BMW 330i do late 30's quite easily...

Do you do enough miles to make having a diesel worth while? Grab a copy of last weeks Auto Express magazine - there was a useful guide in there for the type of mileage you need to be doing to make a diesel car worthwhile...
  • Thanks, will hunt down the AutoExpress article.

I hadn't actually done the maths and had just assumed Diesel would be far more economical - I do about 15k a year of fairly steady 50mph A-Road and motorway to work and back and a bit of round town.

    passat TDI average 51.5 mpg
    BMW 330 34 mpg

If fuel economy is you goal why buy the guzzler
AND>>>> When it snows, as it will soon, get ready to walk in the BMW, you will be going nowhere.

  • vax2002 that's a valid question :)

I guess my logic is I want a performance car in some respects but without sacraficing too much economy and BMW *seem* to do a good job of balancing the two in their current diesel engines.

Nonsense, buy a set of winter tyres and have no trouble whatsoever. Bit of an out of date comparison for you but my father had an e39 530d which done high 40's on a motorway run and high 30's around town. I would expect the newer 330d to better that quite easily

passat tdi (170) 0-60 8,3 s top 137 mph thats not bad for an extra 20 mpg, it is nearly £6 a gallon !

Who buys "winter tyres" hand up, its fun driving past the BMW drivers stuck on the hill in snow as they head gently for the roadside ditch.

I have a set for my Mr2 - Also your indicated mpg for the 330d is rubbish. The passat is by no means a bad car but it's not in the same league performance-wise.

You won't get an extra 20 mpg at 137.
