    Performance ?
hmm here is a little secret, North Yorkshire police are trialling a new speed camera that works up to 2 miles. It has been tested in court and won it is currently on the A 64 if anyone is interested working at a range of 1.7 miles which is long before you see it and long after the flashers have given up warning you as well.
The camera will be rolled out nation wide at the end of August.

So big wallets will be needed for these performance cars i'm afraid, very very big wallets.

Don't need to be speeding to enjoy a quick car, more likely to be driving on roads that will be nowhere near these cameras too.

Is it on trial or has it been approved?

Who buys "winter tyres" hand up, its fun driving past the BMW drivers stuck on the hill in snow as they head gently for the roadside ditch.

I do, my RWD Benz doesn't get stuck, it glides past 4WD's on their summer slicks desperately trying to get some grip, and laughable FWD's slithering towards the kerb whilst giving lots of throttle in first gear.

I get around 43mpg in my 2006 car. That's about 1/3 country roads, and 2/3rds motorway miles. I do around 25,000 a year. For your road types, I'd add a mpg or two onto that figure - on a long motorway run, I can easily get 50mpg.

There's a page on honest john where people can enter their own mpg to give an overall indication.

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/Results?manufacturer=bmw

That suggests an average of 41.6mpg, although 2007 onwards the cars had some refinements that made them more economical (and faster!).

I have a 2008 330D coupe. The computer shows that I have been getting 38.9 mpg over the last 8,000 miles, a good mix of local and motorway and using air con.
Doing a motorway run at a steady speed will get you into the low 50s.

It might be worth looking on a site like Fuelly where owners keep a log of their fuel economy.

Here's one of the story's from autoexpress I mentioned...

A Skoda Octavia 2.0-litre diesel would have to be driven 30,798 miles a year for three years before it becomes less expensive to run than the same car with a 1.4-litre petrol engine.
Again the diesel is £3,190 more expensive that the petrol version, while the petrol model does just eight miles per gallon less than its diesel partner.
Auto Express said: ‘You would need to travel the equivalent of Land's End to John O'Groats nearly 50 times in a year before the diesel makes more financial sense. Unfortunately the average motorist does between 10,000 and 12,000 models annually.

Thanks I was struggling to find the article :)

What they say does make sense but it seems the comparisons aren't always like for like in terms of performance - i.e. Comparing a 1.4 Petrol to a 2.0 Diesel may be more economical but that's not much of a fair comparison :)
