  • I've used milton when fostering kittens on the advice of a Vet, the 3 litters I've had so far have all thrived well (at the detriment of my sleep). In fact I've got one here from my first litter I hand rearedcats001.jpg

The ingredients for Zoflora and Stardrops are on their website:

    http://www.thorntonross.com/household/stardrops.html
    http://www.thorntonross.com/household/zoflora.html

I haven't used either of them, so I don't know how safe either are for pets.

For our pets, we use F10 SCXD which is an avian disinfectant with added detergent because it is bird-safe (as well as other animals). We have two cockatiels and one cat. I( know our avian vet also uses their products, and you can even use some of their products in a spray or in a nebuliser to work against infections in birds (on vet's orders only of course!).

Here is more info on F10:
    http://www.f10biocare.co.uk/products1.html

It's not the cheapest, but it is concentrated, and I know it's safe for my feather and fur babies.

I made this as I was out of cleaner and not able to get to shop for 5 days, and it's the best I've ever used!

    You need:

    empty 500ml kitchen cleaner bottle
    funnel
    teaspoon

    Stardrops
    Zoflora
    Fairy liquid
    White vinegar

Use funnel and teaspoon to put half teaspoon or so of Stardrops into bottle. Add 3-4 drops of Zoflora, two drips of Fairy liquid and two drips of vinegar. Top bottle up with water and shake.

Like all the expensive cleaners. this gives you disinfectant, all purpose cleaner, descaler and a bit of foam.

Hope this helps someone who has run out of cleaner. I don't think I will ever buy cleaner again!

Please read THIS WARNING about mixing cleaners, and don't do it    With my chemist's hat on, it can be really dangerous to mix chemicals which contain bleach (as Zoflora does) with an acid (vinegar) as the toxic gas chlorine can be released, which can be fatal if you don't have good ventilation.

Simple then, leave the vinegar out if you are concerned.

Sorry, it's just not as simple as that. Mixing chemicals (for this is what we're talking about here) can be very hazardous. From the Zoflora site:
Zoflora is a powerful concentrated disinfectant. It is more effective when used without soaps or detergents and where heavy soiling has already been removed.

Do not mix with other chemicals.

It's mixing bleach and acid (which react together to release chlorine) that's dangerous ;)

Zoflora contains benzalkonium chloride, which would react with the acetic acid (vinegar) to release chlorine.

I am OS and believe in stretching the pennies, however I do think we should take note of manufacturers warnings on chemicals. Unfortunately where I live I am not fortunate enough to be able to buy stardrops, hence won't be mixing it with anything! I normally use either Milton (spray bottle although can make own dilute solution) or Tesco anti-bac for small surfaces, DS toys etc, MrMuscle for Kitchen and a generic bathroom cleaner. It does cost more than a HM solution likely would but I know I am not making any lethal cocktails!
(Just for the record I have a degree in Biochemistry but still don't understand all the chemical jargon in labelling!).
    Thanks Queenie.
