Having said that, it would be totally irrelevant in this case, I've never found any insurer that would give advance warning of what their maximum no claims would be stated on the next renewal, and I've never had a warning from a broker that I should be aware my next renewal statement would contain a substantially different ncd from the one I provided at the start.

I renewed one of my cars a few weeks ago and the information was there. It was on a bullet point list. However, I also keep copies of my renewal docs to show a full audit history. I would also expect a broker would be able to show full history for a client of theirs as well.

I had a look at the Aviva site. The only thing that would suggest the ncd could be a problem later is the quote page. The question is ncd, answer is 1 year, 2 year, etc but stops at 5 years or more.
I don't normally have a problem personally, I put in whatever my renewal says, and normally get a better price. From memory though, I think mine have always quoted what I've earned, no, that's not really very true, it's a figure over 5, the real figure should be in double digits.

for anyone facing this problem, just scan in your renewal notice and use photoshop or similar to correct your no claims bonus. Then print it off and send it to your new insurer.

You advised this in another thread.
So several thousand maximum ncd from aviva stating 5 years, and 1 stating 9 years.
I think it may be noticed somewhere, probably when you make a claim if you're lucky.
If you're unlucky, when you're done for forgery.

And just try and get insurance after they report you on the database for committing fraud.

  • I have had problems with Aviva too although unaware I could complain to anyone I didnt do anything about it and now I want to change my car to a more powerful 1 I cant get insurance with the 3 years they left me with!!

When I took out my car insurance with Aviva in 2010 online it only gave the option of selecting 5 years no claims yet I had 7 from Tesco which was my previous insurer.
I contacted Aviva Customer Services and explained that and was told that as long as I sent my proof of no claims it would be fine and my 7 years would be accepted, so I sent my no claims, phoned a few days later and confirmed they had received it I didnt think any more of it.

January 2011 I had an accident which was my fault and I had to claim on my insurance therefore I lost 2 years which should have taken me to 5.
When I received my renewal in August 2011 it stated that I only had 3 years no claims meaning I had lost 4. I contacted customer services again and was just told that I had lost them because of my accident, they couldn't seem to understand that there was only 2 lost from the accident but 2 more for some unknown reason as I explained I had sent my proof of 7 years no claims and was told that would be accepted.

I made a complaint to aviva and when I was eventually contacted I was told that a maximum of 5 years was applied to my policy because they had never received my proof of 7 years no claims from tesco even though i had phoned and confirmed it had been received. If they had not received my no claims surely they should have put my no claims to 0!

I have now been told I can make a complaint to the financial ombudsman and they will see if they can sort it for me (A family friend has recently done the same about another insurer)
Has anyone else done this and been successful? I could understand if I had just gone with what was on the website but its the fact they said they would accept that i had 7 years!

Same problem here with Aviva. Insured with them last year with 11 years NCD the renwal came through this year with '5 years or more' as the NCD. Now all insurance companies I have contacted will only give 6 years NCD max based on the Aviva renewal form. Fortunately I still have the previous one detailing 11 years from Shelia wheels and I have found a company which will accept that one, though not all will. Aviva are scamming you to a) reduce your NCD if you choose to move to another company and b) reduce your NCD to a figure less than 5 years if you should have a claim. Aviva make no mention of this on their web site or within any of their policy documents.

Needless to say Aviva are now on my list of companies never ever to use again.

I don't think this is the case. Though i cannot speak from experience, from what i understand is Aviva's 5 years NCD equals the highest NCD available 75% so regardless if you have 9 years NCD or 5 years NCD the % of NCD you will receive will equate to roughly the same
Total Debt in June 2013: Barclaycard 0% until Nov 2014: £1550

    Tesco CC: £1200 0% Until March 2014

HSBC CC: £384 25%APR - TARGET to make GREEN ASAP

The issue is the customer goes to Aviva with proof of eg nine years and wants to change Insurer at a future renewal, Aviva provide proof of five years no claims. Often the customer has taken cover out with an Insurer having declared eg ten years no claims bonus but when asked to prove it they send in the Aviva five years ncd and subsequently receive a bill from the new Insurer
