Aviva Stealing No claims discount years

Options
Sorry if this has been posted before but im absolutely annoyed with aviva and just wanted to make people aware of this scam.

I took proof of 6 years no claims discount to them from previous insurers and have been with aviva for two years, again claim free.

I have just had my renewal notice and spotted it saying i had 5 years no claims discount and not the expected 8 years. Rang them up and they said the maximum they provide proof for is 5 years irrespective if you've been with them longer claim free, effectively stealing 3 years from me when or if i choose to move on.:mad:

No i have to go cap in hand begging other insurers who run up to 9 years no claims discount to believe me as proving will be hard as its past 2 years since my earlier figures. Entrapment springs to mind as they dont print or advertise this little fact clearly.

Rant over, buyers beware of the deals they offer.

There are differences in the way different insurance companies record the max NCB years.

I'm currently with MoreThan who show me as having entitlement to 10 years or More No Claim Bonus.

In reality, I have a 34 year clean / continuous car insurance record, but that does not mean anything to these insurers.

When I get quotes, if I move to a different insurer, I always point out that irrespective of the number of years NCB quoted on my renewal documents for proof of NCB, I inform them of my clean record, it makes no difference to the quote, but the new company has quoted their own particular max years each time I have changed companies, so I have never lost out AFAIK.

They are not stealing it from you and have done nothing wrong.

There is no standard in how long a company can use for no claims. Aviva use 5 years (which is a very common figure). Some may offer more.

The length of no claims discount the company goes up to should form part of your research when buying. So, if you didnt check when you bought the policy then it is your own fault I'm afraid.

No you dont. All you need to do is show the Aviva confirmation and that of your previous insurer (assuming it went back further). As long as they can see the audit trail of longer no claims then they would be expected to honour it.

As a matter of course, I keep each NCD award letter or renewal so I can prove how long I've been claim-free regardless of what the insurer chooses to use. Fortunately, I got one showing ten years a couple of years ago, so I'll probably just keep that and the subsequent issues in the future...

After 5 years discount there's probably little or no difference to the premium..

Did you not come across this when you got the quote a si did so i decided to not go with aviva as i found a cheaper quote.
  • I was with with Aviva from 2008 till June this year and their "5 years or more" NCD. I have now moved to Direct Line who quoted me based on 9 years NCD and asked for evidence. I supplied them with renewal info from 2008, all saying "5 years or more" NCD. Direct Line will only take this years renewal and will not accept the trail I have provided. They now want £48 additional premium from me for my 4 years "missing" NCD evidence....

I seem to be stuck between a rock and hard place here. Aviva who have a policy of "5 years or more" and Direct Line who have a policy of only accepting the current years' renewal.

What else can I do to evidence my NCD to Direct Line?

    Thank you!

Ask Direct Line what they would accept (although I doubt that the person on the end of the phone, who will be in a call centre, will be able to answer because that will not be in their script).

If no satisfactory answer, then go to a better insurance company who will take notice of your previous renewal evidence.

  • Thanks BAA1. Direct Line will only accept the last renewal and give me the NCD quoted on it. In this case it's "5 years or more" and I qualify for the "or more" but they will only take 5 years.

Looks like I'm screwed and it doesn't seem fair...

Is that what the call centre say or have you taken it further up the line to speak to someone that a) probably knows a whole lot more and b) can make decisions the call centre cannot.

Don't go with direct line then. Or make a formal complaint. The more people that complain, the better it is to get a company to change. Also, the complaints team will often do things the call centre could never agree.

    Thanks DunstonH

Yes, this is what the call centre said. I think I'm going to cough up the extra premium and take it up through the complaints process. As you say, the more people complain, the more likely companies are to change their policy and processes.

The more we ask and resolve on here, the more warning we give others! :)
