Equal rights at Tesco?

I was told by a Tesco employee at the checkouts, yesterday “You have to be careful buying multiple items”.
Slightly confused, I asked why?
“You have been warned before”, was the response.
Warned before?, “Yes when there was an offer on Coke”, Christmas last year I believe.
What a memory.
Again I asked why is it a problem that I purchased 20 packs of Jammie Dodgers totalling £10.40 which was part of a £107.00 shopping list at Tesco Crumlin, County Antrim
“Equal rights, store policy” another member of staff shouted from 10 feet away. I’m a team leader too.
When I asked for the store manager, to address my concern over “equal rights in relation to purchasing Jammie Dodgers” I was told he wasn’t available, and that I would get her and her co-worker in trouble if I complained. For maybe a total of two seconds i felt guilty about this, until she then said” in trouble for letting me buy 20 Packs of Jammie Dodgers”
This is funny now but somewhat ludicrous at the time in front of other customers and my 12 year old,who suggested that we put the Jammie Dodgers back on the shelves.
So Andrea the Team Leader tells me the Store Manager is in the following day between 8 and 9, (wish i had his job), and to do whatever. A real professional approach.
I wonder how long it will be before she moves on to another career?. .
Funny the night before I bought 10 packets of Polo mints along with other general groceries totalling £122.00, including what I believe to be an over-expensive Battery charger, which my 9 year old smuggled in to the trolley.
Nobody told me to be careful on this occasion.I dont think i have infringed on any equal rights.
Equally the night before that, my wife bought two packs of doughnuts (not for me) and two Peppa Pig mags for my six year old, didnt find the need to be careful on this ocassion either.
I think from here on I will be really careful as to what I buy in Tesco..
Sounds serious though, equal rights and all, I think I will have to discuss this with the store manager and Tesco head Office and of my equal rights to shop elsewhere.
I dont even like Jammie Dodgers.
Three cheers for Tesco,

this is more of a rant that a consumer rights issue.
and to answer your question - tesco have the choice to sell to you or not, they could even ban you if they wish...its not about your rights to buy...indeed its not about the specific product (your post is trying to make light of the fact its happened over jammie dodgers)....its about being fair to all consumers.
Put the shoe on the other foot, you really really want to buy something which is on offer, you go into store tobuy it, the shelf is empty and the person in front of you at checkout has 20 packs of the product you wanted...would you consider this fair? I would bet a jammie dodger on the fact you would complain to the store manager about it...
Besides...its not unusual to be known if you shop there every day - especially spending £100 a time...0 -

Tesco certainly do have this right. But it wouldn't be up to a checkout operator's decision. They would have to follow laid out guide lines.
If there's a limit on a special offer it should be displayed.
The OP did nothing wrong, customers should be spoken to in a polite manner, not warned.
I also can't believe there was no manager in the store, something else I'd take up with their head office0 -
Who said the checkout operator had the right to make the decision? No one.
I never said limit, I said being fair.
The Op clearly has a history of this based off previous advice and is clearly confrontational to the checkout operators - and someone can be warned through a polite manner - you only have one side of the story here.
There was no manager in store, big deal, in some jobs the manager isn't even in the same country - its not a preprequisite to have a manager in store at all times.
Like I say, by the rules the OP has done little wrong as such - morally they have - and expecting people to side with them for thier greed is never a good idea, besides, like ive said, could be worse, they could be barred from shopping there...0 -
Many discount offers are loss-leaders to get people into the store. Tesco may lose a few pence per packet, and the manufacturer bear the rest of the subsidy on the grounds that they are getting people to try a product they do not usually buy, they may become regulars.
Now, with that in mind, can you see why one person buying up lots/most/all of the discounted stock serves neither the store nor the manufacturer? This is why they have limits on bulk buying of promotional items. Those limits probably don't even legally need to be on the shelf edge or anywhere particularly visible, and may not even be numeric (eg max 3 items vs reasonable for personal use). It sounds like the checkout person tipped you off that your purchase was against the spirit of the promotion, much as it sounds like you had been warned before, so now you know for certain that they don't like it, and that you may well be prevented from participating in future promotions if you continue to hoard promotions at the detriment of others.
As for buying 2 peppa pigs at retail prices, that is hardly the same as buying 20 packs of biscuits at deeply discounted promotional prices. And !!!!!! has a battery charger got to do with the price of biscuits?!0 -

Personally I would be a little disappointed BUT when as far as I would be concerned, tough! I should have got there earlier.
I know they do it in alot of supermarkets on cases of beer on offer, limit you to 3 or so cases -- although this is more understandable, with sensible drinking in mind, although lets face it, its nothing to do with that, over the fact its only there to get people in through the door.
But in ops shoes, I would be extremely annoyed, the member of staff should have either served her and shut up or not served them to her. Its just bad service to instigate the conversation they had infront of other customers.
If I was op I wouldn't be wasting my time going back in to see the manager though -- I also doubt they would be interested either. But I definately would be filing a complain with head office about the poor customer service the member of staff offered! At the least it will go down to the store manager and somebody will mention it to the member of staff and make a record of iit -- so maybe they'll think twice before making customers feel like idiots.
I'm sick and tired of going into supermarkets (especially Morrisons) and being served by a lazy jobsworth who looks miserable, bored and probably hungover == students.
I always scan the checkouts with an older person on who you know will greet you, smile and is there to make a living -- rather than the part-timer who takes no pride in the work they do and just sees the job as a bit of pocket money until they can better themselves!
(ps. don't get me wrong, this isn't a student/young person bashing post and not all students & young people working at supermarkets have poor attitudes, but in general that is my experience of going to supermarkets.)
(Sorry --- rant over!)
(pps. whats really annoying is when you see somebody go to self-service or the 10 items or less with a trolley full of goods! For goodness sake love, go to a checkout where it will be over quicker, be much easier and we all won't be waiting for you to find the bar code on every single bloody item then struggle to bag everything in the tiny space provided!!!!!)
(ppps. oh, then there is the people that are in a rush in the queue behind you that keep bouncing around, huffing, puffing, moaning to yourself and worst of all standing ridiculously close to you! BACK OFF FOR GOD SAKE AND WAIT PATIENTLY LIKE EVERY BODY ELSE!)
(pppps. don't get me started on the people that when you putting your money/card in the self-service somehow think it appropriate to move from the queue and stand with you so they can use the machine next!!! GIVE ME SOME SPACE!!!!!)
(ppppps. and the people that stop right in front of you in isles ARGHH)
Okay... i'm done, wen't a little bit off topic there. Maybe it would have been better in Praise & Vents
. Partners now ready, to Costa we go

It seems reasonable to assume that most people won't join a consumer forum until such a time they need advice.0 -
What is it with tesco and newbies posting complaints, aren't the other supermarkets worthy of a mention. Do you love the Jammie Dodgers then. Just noticed you say you dont like them.0
