  • I am afraid I don't know that.

The 14.45 is a better bet, no rushing about. ( there is a train between those two but it is more expensive)

BTW If you want something to eat before getting the train as you cross the road from the bus stop towards the railway station there is a Te*** express at the side of the station, much cheaper than buying food on the station or train.

If it's still the same price I think I'll try booking the 1445 and if I do arrive early I'll be sure to visit the **s** ex***** for some 'lunch' - as it's a long journey home in these 'modern times' of slow trains.

Incidentally is there anywhere you can find the 'walk on price' for rail journeys online. As if it's a matter of a few pounds and time is taken out of your hands (flights, buses being on time etc.) it may often not be worse the hassle of booking a 'cheap' advance ticket for a specific train only.

I think the only way you could do that is to go onto the Trainline in the morning and assume you are travelling that same day in the afternoon then hopefully the price that comes up should be the same as you would pay at the station.

If you can do that tomorrow morning then maybe the price will be the same as for next week.

The off peak day single showed up as £23.20.

However the any time single was £35.00.

So unsure if I'd get the £23.20 walk on price or whether they'd charge £35.00

Is there an clarification on what is off and on peak or do they just make it up as they go along? I wonder.

The trainline will give you a price for all the tickets available on any day. If the ticket is described as 'advance' then it's only valid on that particular train

If the ticket is described as 'off peak' or 'anytime' then it is valid on any train that meets those descriptions. It will be the same price on the day - thetrainline doesn't discount such tickets over the station price even if you buy them in advance.

So if the off peak single for example is £23.20 then you can use it on any train for which the £23.20 fare is shown, even if you have booked another one. In your case that means any train for the rest of the day - there isn't an evening peak restriction

The trainline has a disadvantage - it charges fees that most other sites don't. If you do book use the company that runs the train - they won't charge a fee and in some instances offer a discount

So the £19.40 advance single would be £21.40 (assuming The Trainlines £1 booking fee). So with the walk on off peak being £23.20 I guess for peace of mind and flexibility it's probably not worth the saving to book a certain train - especially as I'm relying on Ryanair and then a bus.

Incidentally, does anyone know a University that offers degrees in train fares and timetables. It seems you need one.
When searching, one of the cheapest tickets I could find was from Nottingham - Preston (with a change at Derby and Crewe), yet when I tried searching from Derby to Preston the train (from Derby) stated in that journey 'vanished' and the price rose by £15. CRAZY!
