East Midlands Airport (travel from).

  • At least the Skylink buses don't use the M1.

It can be just getting away from the airport, and then with the Nottingham Skylink there is the A453, as any locals will know.

Skylink Derby drop off at Derby Railway Station. Buses are every hour from the early hours of the morning ie 00:43, 01:43, 02:43 etc until the morning and then its every 30 mins throughout the rest of the day. There is a Skylink Nottingham from the same stop outside the airport and a Skylink Loughborough.

There may be an airport link bus between airports.

Here's a link to the page on getting to and from the airport. It says the buses between EM Airport and the EM Parkway rail station no longer operate but you can book a shared ride via Arrow Taxi's for £5.75 to get to the station.

Matt They have stopped the bus service to the EM Parkway station.

So now there is a railway station in the middle of nowhere with no access by public transport, and as it is only on the Nottingham/London line it is not much use to anyone wanting to go to the north west.

Ah sad times, I used it a lost last year but guess I always travelled from Leicester, London or Leeds (changing in Derby)

If you use this airport when there is a race on at donnington or the download festival is on allow extra time as the traffic is horrendous

It is only about 20 to 30 minutes to any of the stations if that depending on the traffic of course. and no ther is no direct rail from the airport.

    Good point

The only racing on that is likely to cause traffic problems is 9/10/11 Sept when British Superbikes are on

    Wow, so many replies.

I'll be arriving on Tuesday 23rd August, so hopefully I'll be safe from all the 'festivals'. I'm heading to the North-West (anywhere in the area of Lancashire would do - Preston, Bolton, Manchester etc. though there doesn't seem to be any advance single tickets available) so East Midlands Parkway is out of the question, as I would have to get a train from there to Nottingham anyway.

So next question is, cheapest route and method home..........anyone got any ideas? There seems to be loads of different routes, but some seem ridiculous.
Is it ever cheaper to use a certain rail booking site or are they all the same price? (i.e. - the trainline.com)

  • What time of day will you be arriving at the airport?

I think that may be important to decide how to travel cheaply.

  • I have just looked at Trainline for Derby/Manchester and Nottingham/Manchester and although it does depend on the time of day it looks as though Nottingham/Manchester has the cheapest tickets on some trains.

If it's on time 12:45pm (afternoon).

  • The cheapest ticket (£15) is on the train leaving Nottingham at 13.45.

Now to catch that you would have to hope

    The plane landed early
You didn't have to wait for the bus from the plane
There were no queues at passport control
You had no luggage to pick up
The Skylink bus was in and just as you got on it it went
    There were no traffic holdups
No queues at the ticket window

So you can't rely on that.

The next reasonably priced is the 14.45 at £19

Plenty of time to catch that one.

I don't plan to take any hold luggage with me (too expensive) - flight was already too much as it was .

But still, I think going for the 1445 would be a better option regardless. Incidentally, do you know what the 'walk on fee' is for the same journey?
