Not a freebie, but a scam to be aware of...

Options
"Information Team" Phone Scam
Please be aware of the following scam doing the rounds.

A message is left on your phoneline, or a recorded message plays when you answer it, along the lines: "Hi, this is James from the Information Team, you have a message awaiting your collection. To collect your message just call us on 0871 xxxxxx, Thanks'

James has a very posh English accent.

It seems these 0871 numbers are not regulated in the same way as the premium numbers. I assume they are working on the principle that if enough people call and wait long enough in a queue the profits will soon add up.

Please be careful with this scam. As a general rule, never reply to an 0871, 070 or 090 number unless you know who it is from and are aware of how much you'll pay (and how much they'll make!)

wasn't there something similar to this, but they say they have a parcel or package for you - I received a card through the door, I was suspicious the moment I saw that my name or address wasn't on it - I just binned it - thing is though, it's so easy to get caught out

It certainly is easy to be caught out and this one would catch plenty people out, especially if they are dialling work numbers, which is why i posted it. It's disgusting nothing is being done about it! I heard about the parcel scam Frugallass and warned my parents who luckily warned my elderly great aunt who received the card the next day! She called my mam when she got the card to ask if it's the one my mam warned her about and she took a lot of convincing that it was a scam.

i think many people are not aware of this including myself. was it just a card through the door asking u to dial a premium charge number in order to collect a parcel?

I had a voicemail message from an electronic voice the other day saying it was Halifax and I needed to call them on some random number to confirm my details... I just left it. Never trust anything like that!

This has been going on for quite a while. Lots of people have posted about this on the Warnings and Rip-off Moneysaving board.
