In any cases like these ensure that you report the number to OFCOM http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/ - all UK telephone numbers and telephone service operators/providers are regulated, so even if the "scammer" does not operate from within the UK, OFCOM will be able to track the provider of the 08xx, 09xx, 07xx etc service.

Thank you MrsYorkie for this. I'm currently in a DMP and have calls now and again from companies I've never heard of and recently a few of my debts have been sold on. Luckily I was too slow just now when I received this call and didn't get the number from the recorded message.

I knew somebody on here could help me find out if it's a scam.

    Thank you!

  • Hello I use TPS (telephone preference service) free online to stop market researcher types calling me does anyone know if TPS stops these kind of calls? I think I'll check that forum I seen earlier that's about scams and swindlers.
  • Hello forgot to leave the link to TPS https://www.tpsonline.org.uk it's free and takes up to 28 days to work have used it for ages and have only had the once in a blue moon unauthorised caller e.g market reasearcher/kitchen seller and as soon as I say they can't call as I am with TPS they get off the phone quickly.

Its good but only works against companies in the UK - eg call centres in India don't really care (same with MPS and junkmail) - had one the other night wittering on about "Let me know your TPS de-registration number and I'll take you off our list" (no such thing) .

I don't recall that TPS has actually ever got round to fining anyone?
Wins so far this year: It's been a quiet year so far :)

i think many people are not aware of this including myself. was it just a card through the door asking u to dial a premium charge number in order to collect a parcel?

  • hi,

last year i got a message on my phone saying that i bought ringtones!!!!! I was very suprised as i would never buy anything like this! they told me that £4 was going to be debited every week by my mobile phone network for the ringtones that i orded from them!!!!! I was panicking!!!! phone t mobile who told me that they didn,t know anything about it!!!! on the message there was a phone number to cancel them ringtones, 0871....... . So what did i do? phone and waited, waited, waited I think it was 40mns something in total!!! My phone bill came and i had to pay around £50 for that one call!!!! I call ofcom who gave me the company details. I got lucky and claimed the full amount back from them +vat! It was defenitly a lesson well learned for me!!!
