I felt it was a bit much when a seller e-mailed me asking for feedback before I'd even got the item! (it wasn't that great either)
  • I like people to leave feedback if only to close the transaction. Once I know they are happy with the item I know I can withdraw the money from paypal!
I have sold a few expensive things around £200, sent them abroard and never heard another word - I don`t think its too much to ask is it!

I think sellers who won't leave feedback until the buyer's left feedback are a bit sad. If someone pays on time and meets all their conditions, what's the problem with telling the truth?

yep this winds me up :/ i buy a lot of stuff and find sellers dont leave feedback when they have dispatched the item (when i think they should leave it) instead they wait untill i have left feedback so they can neg me if i neg them when somthing goes wrong with the sale (which it has a few times lately).

Unfortunately, this is a perpetual argument, and both sides of it have valid points, hence why it keeps cropping up.

From your buyers point of view, I can see why you would think that is how it should be done, but from the sellers point of view, things can seem different. For example, some sellers feel that the transaction isn't over until the buyer has received the item and is completely happy. Afterall, if something is wrong with the item, or if there is some other problem, the buyer will still be expecting the seller to sort it out long after the item itself has been dispatched.

On top of this, there are many people out there who will try it on using various scams. e.g. They may buy an item and claim it hasn't been delivered even though it was. They may buy an item of (for example) clothing, wear it and then try and return it saying that it wasn't in the condition it was sold in. Or some people buy an item to replace a faulty item they already have, and then claim that the item they bought from the seller was faulty and send their faulty item back, keeping the actual item the seller had sold in it's place. There are many other scams as well.

So from the sellers point of view, there are many valid reasons why they may not want to leave feedback first, or until they have heard from the buyer and know that they are happy.

As a seller, I have made the choice to leave feedback as soon as I dispatch the items, however this policy has bit me in the bum a couple times, and I can fully understand why other sellers have a different policy.

  • i agree with you and i never expect feedback anyway when buying, but i find it annoying that sellers are using it against me as blackmail for their poor service when i have done my bit. im still missing a few feedbacks from items i had trouble with and had to contact the sellers (il probably get negged).

i guess it will just make me look like a moaning hard to deal with pain if i get enough negs from useless sellers

Sometimes I don't bother leaving any feedback if I'm not 100% satisfied with the item/delivery etc etc but not sufficiently disappointed to go to the bother of contacting a buyer.

Feedback is optional and I only give it when I think it is warranted.

Can be a bit annoying when you dont get feedback. As people tend to buy more from established sellers with good high feedback. I am still waiting on 40 feedback, but i wont hassle them for it. After all it is optional so not the end of the world if you dont get them.

As for sellers not leaving feedback until they have recieved theres from the buyer is pretty standard practise on ebay, after all until the buyer recieves there bough item, the transaction is still open. So you cant in all honesty leave a feedback until you know the outcome.

I dont leave feedback to buyers until i recieve a feedback first and then can comment on there feedback, instead of leaving ebay's standard feedback reply, more personal that way.

    I don't like non feedback.

I will always leave feedback as soon as the item arrives and I've checked it (one exception being one christmas pressy I bought a couple of weeks ago for the wife which was all sealed up nicely - so naughtily I waited until Christmas morning - then left the feedback (which was positive) - a really good purchase)

I always wait for the feedback from sales before leaving feedback - I want to know that the other person is happy before I can truely comment on how good the selling experience is - similarly I do not object to people waiting until I've left feedback for my purchases before leaving theirs (though I don't like them not leaving it). On occasions I've even asked for it - though reading peoples comments above - I might change that idea (especially after I left my feedback!)

I would never leave a nut or a neg to someone who has not already left feedback for me (not that it is tit for tat - but I would be afraid of them using tit for tat). Most of the time those who I would want to leave neg for are already banned by the time I get around to reconsidering leaving them neg feedback.

I do find the whole feedback system pointless though - you might as well have a positive only option. Realistically most transactions should be nutral - they went as planned but they could be improved upon. Which is the trap with places like amazon - i felt guilty the other day after leaving a good feedback there (which came up as 4 stars) because the seller now will have a less than perfect score - he was completely trustworthy, but I didn't really think they deserved the full excellent star.

    Bit paranoid that may irritate people though & cause them to leave neutrals/negs;

I too used to remind customers to send feedback - I now use the reminder system, but my email says something like "you should have recieved your item, I hope it's okay and I've left feedback for you". Although it's not 100% effective, it is pretty good as it is perceived by the buyer as a 'nice' email and reminds them of their purchase.
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.
