Kitchen Diner or Separate?

2

Comments

  • Having had both, I'd plump for kitchen/diner. When we've had a seperate dining room, it's been used maybe a few times a month at best. Whereas the table in the kitchen is used constantly. Our neighbours here extended their cottage at the rear (double height, so it looks like a barn conversion) and knocked through from the old kitchen to create a large, airy cooking and eating space. The kitchen has a breakfast bar/peninsula that effectively acts as a divider, and they have a formal dining table. They've also done clever things with the lighting, so that you can dim down the kitchen area seperately from the dining area, which effectively divides the two sections.
  • Like a few other people I have a kitchen/diner and seperate dining room. Our table in the kitchen is used 3 times a day and our dining room table has yet to be used lol . The dining room is more of a show room tbh and we probably should make the most of it but it hasn't worked out that way maybe because of the kids!!

I have a kitchen with room for a smallish table, we use that for breakfast and lunch. It's an informal area where you can come an go as you please. We don't eat breakfast together as we all leave at different times, lunch is a bit haphazard too.

I also have a dining room which we use for our main meal of the day. I find the idea of having a dining room and not using it a waste. We do all sit down at the table together for our evening meal as I think it's an important part of family life.

You have separate rooms now- do you like it like that? Or does it drive you nuts that you have a door/hallway/some other separation between them? How big is your kitchen (or, really: how big will it be with the extention)- can you fit a table in there for homework/extra work space/informal meals (even if it's not the whole family dining informally)?
Re price: having a separate dining room is a more posh thing to do, so should make it a more expensive house than just a dining kitchen, but not if the kitchen is so tiny you can't even fit a cafe table and two chairs into it!

for me kitchen diner all the way. we always go for this in all of our previous houses.

its much more cosy and i feel part of things when cooking or entertaining.

we dont do elegant entertaining only dear friends and they dont mind my pots or cooking smells. if they did they wouldnt be invited to dinner.

i dont believe a separate dinning room would ever be used by us x

Separate for me too but we've always had room to eat in the kitchen as well.

personally i like separate rooms but i seem to be in the minority

when i look at houses on rightmove, im attracted much more to the ones where either the rooms are separate or you can just fit doors on the archway through so that you can have it open when needed or closed when you dont

not that we're looking to move but im just nosey

ive just realised that i was talking about a lounge diner, not kitchen diner

    sorry

however, i still quite like separate rooms and if money ever allows i would like a kitchen big enough for a table and then another dining room (not linked to the lounge)

If I had to choose, I would prefer the kitchen/diner. Much more practical for a family.

We are lucky enough to have a large lounge/dining room AND a large kitchen /diner with room for a sofa.

So the best of both worlds.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - I think I'm definitely swaying more towards knocking the whole thing into one!!!
