  • Have I got it wrong or is the whole point here that people who have not entered their phone number into their own profile may well have a good reason for not doing so. To find that a friend with an iphone has synced the information into their Facebook contacts has a flaky feel about it. After all this means that Facebook servers now have a lot of information they didn’t have before and without the owner’s permission.

It’s all very well saying that the information is only available to the iphone owner in their contacts list but that does not quite line up with “Contacts may be used to improve the quality of friend suggestions for you and your friends”.

Can anyone think of any other uses they may be put to in the future?

That's nothing...do a search for "my new number" and see how many people give their numbers away in public groups :D
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I don't know about you but that does not fill me with confidence.

If you owned an international data base which was collecting millions of mobile phone numbers would you be able to resist a peek.

In Britain there was much fuss about the creation of a National Data Base of ID numbers. Having an international data base of telephone numbers could be as good (better) if FB was hacked or FB themselves thought it would be a nice little earner.

I reckon if only one in ten people use an iphone or whatever works then the coverage would be high. I know two people with iphones so I guess my number is in there somewhere.

So you've no way of knowing if someone has put your phone number in their address book on FB?

If they have FB will have or would be able to link your phone number to your account, but you'll have no visibility of that.
