A dire choice of broadband providers in my new place :(

  • You could look at the broadband or the Broadcall (home phone and broadband) offer by Utility Warehouse. It's a really good deal and the Max offer is unlimited. If you want to know more contact me back.

    Given how much I use the internet at home (media center that almost all tv is watched through, 2xlaptop, xbox 360) and the throughput of data that I get through (I'm temporarily residing with a family member who has plusnet, I have had to temporarily upgrade the service to 60gb, considering that I am only there 5 days out of 7, have been using as little bandwidth as possible, and had chewed through 20gb of data in less than three weeks) I should probably just bite the bullet and buy some decent broadband. In Jan 2010 they had a no-startup-fee offer. What I'm concerned about (and trust me, if it'll happen it'll happen to me) - is I buy it, it's set up and two months later they waive the fee!

    If not Sky, then you've got the choice of all of the non-LLU resellers, but obviously that will cost you more than an LLU.
    If you've worked for Orange then you should know all about their repuation for broadband...
    As you're aware, low cost and high usage limits on non-LLU services is a bit of a holy grail.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Personally , If using media Streaming , Gaming ect. I'd be looking more towards LLU.

    You'll have lower latency for gaming and a much more control over you connection. The last thing you want , is to be a the mercy of BT's DLM & constanly watching you usage.

    Sky is LLU though, isn't it? Although still BSkyB which is my biggest issue...I can't help but feel Sky broadband is one big bait 'n switch operation!

  • Yes on your exchange its LLU. Have to be careful some thimes as they also offer "sky connect" which is BT based.

    Alot have the same "feel" .They are growing very rapidly & it does worry people they will change usage terms in time.

    Just have to way up the balance of probabilities. If the cost saving is worth future issues over a 12 month tie in contract.

    Well I bit the bullet and purchased Xilo broadband. Turns out they're based about a mile from my old haunt! Their sales staff were a bit obtuse (read:unhelpful) and didn't really answer the queries I had, but given the shining reviews I'll try them out.

    Bought a Zoom Bridge/Semi Bridge modem, borrowing a D-Link DIR 615 with DD-WRT firmware installed.

    Will report back once connected (don't actually move into new place until end of the month)

    Hi all, just an update;

    Moved in, broadband was all ready to go out of the box (the best way to do it I reckon!) and I have no complaints. I have an error free line, and it looks as though Sam Knows was wrong; connection speed: 13mbps - was getting download speeds of a consistent 1.75MB/s - brilliant :)

    So Uno was hassle free, easy to set up my (Zoom ADSL 2/2+) modem with my (D-Link DIR-615 DD-WRT) router using PPPoE on the router and setting up the encapsulation on the modem (pretty straightforward) - no complaints.

    It would appear that your exchange already has ADSL2+ then?
