HELP! They're cutting our gas off! Rights as tenants question

  • May be the OP just wanted to have a debate and understand things better. May be he/she is not fully in sync with the "system". Lets not label him/her as trying to get some cash. I am sure in the end the sense of reasoning will prevail and he/she will co-operate with NG.

Why is it the tenant can't go one day without hot water, even though they have an electric stove and I am sure saucepans to boil water up in?

Many of us have to go several days if not weeks without a utility when something isn't working and a repair man is in short supply. Moaning about no hot water truly takes the biscut in this case, when it is still available in another way.

This has nothing to do with the LL. It is the supplier the tenant needs to take issue with.

I cant understand why people think their landlords are responsible for everything.

My pipes were frozen in the winter I had NO water whatsoever for 5 days, maybe I should have called my landlord and asked for use of his shower or gone to a hotel and billed him.

These things happen, theyre an inconvenience but its a temporary thing. Least its not happening in the middle of the winter when being without heating would be a nightmare

I trust you informed the LL of this? Frozen pipes very often burst and then leak quite forceabilly when they thaw out.

They need to be lagged correctly and that is a responsibility of the landlord.

Burst pipes left unchecked can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to both the landlords building and your possessions.

OP as far as the gas thing goes.. Allow them access to sort out your meter. If they do cut off your supply moan like crazy to them and the regulator AFTER THE FACT. Then and only then would there be some responsibility on the part of the supplier to sort it out. If there is a question of compensation it will boil down to how long you are without and how far it inconveniences you, for example do you have any young children? Compensation may be claimable against the supplier. If after a couple of weeks there is no action on the part of the supplier then contact the EHO at your local council, do this earlier on day one if you have young children. The EHO has the power to put the supplier on the hurry up. Push comes to shove the gas supplier will force entry to the un-cooperative flats to conduct the work.

Don't worry you will have your gas supply restored long before the weather turns cold.. It would be courtesy to keep your landlord appraised of what is going on.

Be aware many of the posters in here are landlords themselves, rather than assist you practically as I hoped I have above they simply expect you to doff your forelock and thank them for providing you with a roof over your head.

LL or tenant (I happen to be both at the moment), this is beyond the landlord's powers.

LL's don't have magic wands, contrary to popular belief.

Just as it would be beyond any homeowners' powers.

NG need to replace pipes and meters. If the other owners, leaseholders or tenants are uncooperative, there is not much the individual flat owner or occupier can do, other than trying to mobilise support and unity in the building to get this resolved as soon as possible.

After the event both owners & tenants can complain as much as they like to NG, EHO and anyone else who will listen, but if they did a little before to try to get in touch with other owners, the freeholder, or the other tenants, the situation might not occur.

I did indeed, informed the letting agency and my landlords mum direct. Had a plumber out to check it within the hour who confirmed it was down to the artic conditions and everything looked fine
