Would it really take so much time and effort to knock on 7 doors and maybe even post a little note in them proposing what sooz has said? It cannot be your ll's fault or problem. It is yours. Take some responsibility and deal with it yourself. Then you wont have to worry about having no gas - Will you? Or are you just hoping for a stay in a hotel?

If they ignored notes from national grid then they'll ignore notes from me won't they?

Go round to your neighbours and organise things, it's the neighbourly thing to do and ensures that you are subjected to the least amount of disruption. This has nothing to do with the LL and everything to do with how you as a decent person chose to behave.

Brilliant! What makes you think they'll answer the door for me but not national grid? Even one person on holiday for 2 weeks would still cause the gas to be disconnected. But hey, I suppose that's my responsibility for not finding out they were going on holiday?

You'll get used to washing in cold water, I'm sure. It'll harden you up no end.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

And the more time you spend complaining on here, the more likely that is. You're running out of time, so I suggest you get working on the problem this evening and do your level best to get it sorted. The LL has zero liability in this case and you will get nowhere by complaining to him about it. If you must complain, direct your concerns to the National Grid and OfGem and Transco (or whoever is responsible these days) but I guarantee, you will be told that these are necessary and immediate repairs and you must comply with their instructions. The LL will probably tell you the same (I would).

  • So just to be clear, if our gas is cut off then the landlord does not need to do anything by law?

OK. We've complained to national grid and the office for fair trading. The OFT basically said "it's their connection, they can do what they want with it".

    er.

    Yes.

You may be a tenant, but for the purposes of this situation, you are the 'homeowner' and the gas supply or lack of is your responsibility to maintain. The LL wouldnt be responsible if you got cut off for non-billpayment either....

You have your answer. When it comes to Gas and anything to do with it, they have the same shocking powers as HMRC. They can break your door down if they want to.

Not if you are the one that has a contract with the gas company.

Well technically we don't have a contract with National Grid, but with Southern Electric who supply our gas.
