    How about an elastic band?

I am thinking it is one of those trick ones, where there is particular emphasis on the words, like "flexible"

    Largest Appendix Removed

    WHO:
    Dr. Riaz Ahmed Khokhar
    WHAT:
    23.5 cm (9.2 in)
    WHERE:
    Islamabad, Pakistan
    WHEN:
    June 11, 2003

An appendix removed from a 55-year-old Pakistani man on June 11, 2003, at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, Pakistan, measured 23.5 cm (9.2 in) in length. The operation was carried out by Dr. Riaz Ahmed Khokhar.

The appendix is a long, thin, worm-like pouch sticking out of the join between the large and small intestines. Doctors are still not sure of its purpose – or even if it has a purpose – and although it contains immune-system cells, if it's surgically removed, health doesn't suffer.

    Ta all.

Joho thanks for your research, but the 'thing' is deff. '21cm and flexible'

Edit; It was implied on the radio show that the word flexible meant that the size - 21cm - was variable !!??

Having re-read your first post you say 'the length of the thing was flexible' which implies that the thing might be coiled, say - so it could be its stretched length or its coiled length. It's not that the thing itself is flexible. Is that right?

What a brainteaser? Is there a webpage with all the wrong answers?

It could be this, see this story: link

A bunny whose ears are 21cm but the claim may not be accepted because people are feeding their bunnies too much.
