I avoid giving my number if I don't have to - they have all my other contact details. I don't like the idea of sales calls.

I joined about 3 weeks ago, and so far have won 2 tickets to the World Environment concert in London (which I couldn't go to) and also 2 tickets to "How We Are: Photographing Britain Observers Readers' Evening" at the Tate, which is tomorrow night, and I can't go to that either.

So that's £45.00 worth of stuff so far :)

Theorteical question. (Those who know which thread I'm on about will understand).

I enter a competetion for a fee. I change my mind about entering and inform organisers. I receive notification of winning, which is cancelled. Where do I stand?

Morally - you've withdrawn & the organiser will/ has refunded you - why should you expect anything more? You're not entitled to winnings.
Legally - is your entry still valid (need to see T&Cs) & therefore entitled to winnings.

However, for me the real question is how do we handle such enquiries when a newbie, or well known troll such as Dave Brooker, comes to the board?

I've tried to alert people as have others, but what else can/ should we do?

I'd be careful of classing a newbie as a troll straight away, as not all newbies are trolls. I'd have a look at their previous posts (if there are any) before replying to them. If there aren't any previous posts, i'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but not turn the question into a massive long thread. One or two replies for example should suffice.

If it's a well known troll, then the first post (or a post in the thread) should warn of this. If people stick to my suggestion of only one or two replies, it will be easier to see first off if it's a troll, instead of having to read masses of posts before finding out (and maybe missing it).

    What do you think?

I know it's a hard one, because we don't want to ostracise anyone if they are a genuine newbie. After all, it's great community here and i for one don't want it to descend into 'cliques' as on other forums. :)

Sorry to sound naive ... but what is a troll? Is it someone who is trying to advertise a dodgy website in an underhand way, or someone trying to cause trouble??

I know this probably sounds like an obvious question, but I am fairly new to MSE. I know am not a troll though! Trolls are obviously people up to no good some how and I am just here to contribute to the community :)

They haven't updated the Cut off Sleeves today. I feel lost without it.

Lbt, its not a naive question. From wikipedia:-

In Internet terminology, a troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding.[1] They may also plant images and data on networks that others may find disturbing (usually indirectly relating to the individual in person) in order to cause confrontation. While not necessarily related to hacking, such a practice is against the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in the United Kingdom, where mischief is caused in order to ensure chaos is spread.

Hi I am new and very addicted. I have been doing it everyday for about 2 weeks and must enter about 20 comps aday. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posts comps on here especially someone called kipper who tends to pop up so much.

I just wondered how long was it before anyone won anything when they first started?

Is it just me who belts to the door when the postman arrives just incase?

    Thanxs to everyone.
