Just put what they ask for. If you've won and they need any more details they contact you.

    Hi guys,

I am new to the whole competitions thing and I have a few small questions:

-do you absolutely need to give your phone numer to win or can you just use 000000000000?
-also when it asks you to send entries on a postcard, can you enclose the postcard in an envelope or send a letter? I dont really like the idea of sending my details through the post.

    Thanks very much!

I normally give my phone number so they can contact me if I win sometimes though many people just let you know by email now.

I never enter postcard comps but I dont see the problem in sending your details on a postcard - after all any details on the card like your name and address are on any mail sent to you anyway!

If they ask for a contact number then of course you should give it,They might just want to notify you of a win. I give mine as my standard details. Theres no problem with that.
If they ask for a postcard entry, then thats what they want, no envelope, just a postcard. They want to see your entry at a glance. With thousands of entries opening envelopes would add hours to their work load.

So basically if you want to enter a comp, you give them what they want.
It's their comp & their rules.
  • I have to admit, I don't often read the terms and conditions unless I'm unsure of something. So, I entered the Grand Idea comp with MTV and received an email saying I'd won £100 of FOPP vouchers.

Unfortunately I hadn't read the bit that said you had to be between 16 and 25 to enter - so they emailed me again and said I was too old to win  They took my prize away! :(

Oh well, easy come - easy go...

I only read the t&c's mainly for holidays/breaks to check the date and whether children are included! If its a holiday just for adults then I don't bother entering cos I can't leave the children at home for a week on their own if I win! Unfortunately most of the good holiday competitions don't include children. I enter the 1 or 2 night short break comps though. As for other types of comps I don't bother reading t&c's unless its a kids website and I enter for my eldest. :D

    NOW IN COMPING SEMI-RETIREMENT! :D
