Then they'd have to re home them elsewhere anyway.

wonder how long it would be before someone would claim evicting them would breach their Art 8 right to a private life?!

It made me laugh when Cameron said 'they'll feel the full force of the law'. Everyone knows sentencing is a joke these days.

Actually David, I don't think many people are really laughing.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Report on the telegraph about a student (with no criminal record) has been sentenced to 6 months for nicking some bottled water from Lidl. That has really wound me up when you hear about the pathetic sentences others have been given.

I know someone who works in a council's housing department and they say if someone is evicted they will not be offered another council house in the area.

It's a bit like the many MP's who were caught fiddling their expenses.
Of the dozens that were discovered, some were totally ignored, some had to simply pay back a bit of money and a very few had their cases referred to the CPS and a couple of them eventually received prison time.
It's these one or two cases that the government use to try to prove their argument that they took stern action against the dishonest MP's, and it will probably be the same for the student who was given 6 months.
Cameron will probably use this as "proof" that the rioters all felt the full force of the law.

They want to be members of gangs, then bring back chain gangs.
A few months of back breaking toil, cleaning up the streets getting rid of graffiti getting public spaces up to scratch. Along woth a large dose of public humiliation, may make them realise that there are consequences to their actions.

I read the Telegraph article and it seems that he was sentenced for looting a case of bottled water. Slightly different to nicking some bottled water. As far as the Law goes it's still stealing, whether it's a £3.40 case of water or a £340 TV.

Are you saying that it's acceptable to loot water but not TVs?

It is obviously not, but the sentence does seem disproportionate when related to some of the other sentences that have been passed.

They seem to be sending out a very clear message that doing things that hurt people is somewhat unacceptable but if you deprive or attempt to deprive someone of their property then you are in serious trouble.

Agreed, but it was in the context of looting during a riot and I would expect exemplary sentences to be handed out. Indeed our Goverment asked for them.
The title of this thread is Laughable sentencing re riots yet some are complaining about the severe sentence handed down in this one case (of water)*.

Moving on, many of the looters are now remanded in custody awaiting more severe Crown Court Sentencing as a magistrate's court has limited sentencing powers.

    Time will (hopefully) tell.

Aside - I hate the use of "sending a message" as it is doesn't mean anything of the sort and depends so much on context. It's just another way for the writer to say "in my opinion". Even David Cameron is guilty of this.
